Company-Wide Conservation Efforts
For over four decades, West Marine has assisted boaters on the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers. Being boating’s largest retailer, we believe we have a responsibility to minimize the environmental impact of products on the waterways that are so critical to every living thing. We at West Marine are boaters ourselves. Supplying the best boating accessories and related boating products, conserving marine resources, and protecting the environment are core to both our personal and business mission.
We are pleased with the progress we’ve made on our sustainability journey, but know there are more challenges ahead. We aim to supply our Customers with the very best products possible. If they exist, we’ll carry them; and when they don’t exist, we’ll try to create them. Over the past few years we have developed and grown our West Marine Pure Oceans line of maintenance products, which have already reduced the amount of chemicals of concern going into our waters by hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Over the next five years, we plan to accelerate our efforts while evaluating our progress and doing everything we can to reduce our environmental impact. By reporting both our strengths and weaknesses we are trying to be transparent about the significant improvement we’ve made, but also acknowledge we’ve hardly scratched the surface of what needs to be done. It is noteworthy that we’re on track to meet our reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and I applaud our 4,000 Associates for their efforts.
As the global leader in boating we need to do more. We’ve made great progress in the last few years reducing our carbon footprint, increasing recycling, and supporting cleaner oceans. Now it is time to crank up our efforts, and really challenge ourselves. We’ve set extremely challenging aspirational goals for 2017, as we hope to make even more progress going forward.
Our aspirational goals for 2017 are:
- Reduce landfill waste by 25%
- Reduce our carbon footprint by 25%
- Improve product Sustainability by 25%
- Be a leader in ocean conservation.
Our 2011 Sustainability Report outlines the challenges we face and continues our commitment to the goals we have set forth.
