Explore the Seas
GPSMAP 740 contains preloaded map data for all U.S. coastal areas, including Alaska and Hawaii, plus Explorer Charts for the Bahamas. GPSMAP 740 also features an internal, high-sensitivity GPS receiver for superior satellite tracking and quicker acquisition times. And as an added benefit, GPSMAP 740 can receive graphical weather data for North America through the optional GXM™ 51 satellite receiver/antenna.
Take Control by Touch
Input is easy with GPSMAP 740. Whether you’re changing course or simply reviewing information in front of you, the intuitive touchscreen interface makes for simple operation. The device also offers flexible brightness levels for daytime readability along with low-light dimming during night use. Expand with Radar
Featuring a built-in radar port, GPSMAP 740 can be interfaced with Garmin’s line of affordable GMR™ marine radar systems. Whether you’re adding radar now or in the future, you’ll enjoy the convenience of “plug-and-play installation” as well as the power, range and high-definition targeting of our proven radar offerings.¹
Add Sonar with GPSMAP 740s
GPSMAP 740s comes standard with a 1kW-capable sonar transceiver. This powerful sonar can help you define fish targets and underwater structures as far down as 2,000 feet when used with a 1kW transducer.²
Add Extras with BlueChart g2 Vision
With the optional BlueChart® g2 Vision SD™ card, you can add a whole new dimension of exceptional features to your chartplotter.
- MarinerEye view and FishEye view provide you a 3-dimensional perspective of map information, both above and below the waterline.
- High-resolution satellite images and aerial photographs help you orient yourself in unfamiliar areas.
- Auto Guidance technology searches through all relevant charts to create a route you can actually follow - one that avoids obstacles, shallow water, buoys and other obstructions.
¹Garmin Marine Network not supported.
²Depth capacity is dependent on water salinity, bottom type and other water conditions (with 1 kW transducer).

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
Garmin has hit a homerun with the Garmin 740S Chartplotter. The quickest plus one discovers is that it is very user friendly; intuitive is the current word to describe this feature. To use the unit one simply presses the "on" button for 2 seconds which turns on the unit; after approx 20 secs it is ready for you to use, and displays several choices, each in their own screen "box".
Selecting a choice requires only touching the desired box, which brings up that mode.
Scrolling in the chart mode is done with the swipe of a finger. And the chart refreshes quicker than 90% of currently available chartplotters; there's no delay in moving the chart. Zooming "in" or "out" on the chart is done with a finger touch of a "+" or "-" symbol at the bottom of the chart screen.
The charts provided with the 740S are top of the line. I've used them around the coast of Florida AND in the northern Bahamas and the detail is excellent for all these areas. Garmin is second to none with their charts.
The "S" of the 740 denotes built-in Sonar circuitry and their sonar within the 740S is as good as any but the most demanding will require.
A real plus of the Garmin 740 is that the GPS antenna is built into the unit - no external antenna required - the antenna even quickly captures GPS signals through your boats fiberglass so mount the unit where you like and it will play well for you.
Mounting and electrical hookup is simple and straight forward. If you're handy with tools you can do it yourself in an afternoon.
I'm totally satisfied with my selection of the Garmin 740S, after several months usage.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
This thing is great. The screen works in cold, and the screen is PLENTY big enough. It's perfect for our boat, a 35 foot luhrs alura. We haven't really got much fishing out of it yet since the boat is new (to us), but I had a moment where I saw a mark moving up and the rod went straight down, so it works. We have weather, sonar, chartplotter, and they all work great. It comes off the mount very easily, just unscrew two wires like cable TV type, and unscrew the mount knobs and you're off. Mount is very strong.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
The 740 is a fabulous touch screen GPS. That said, some idiot Garmin engineer thought it was a good idea to use magnets - yes magnets - to keep the data card door closed. This means that you MUST mount your 740 at LEAST 32 inches from your compass. About the most idiotic design flaw I have seen in years.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
Touch screen is great once you get used to how sensitive it is.
I use it for off shore fishing
The wiring diagrams for tying into different accessories could be a little more helpful (i.e. Yamanha smart gauges)

This is an amazing unit. Easy to install. Very user friendly and easy to manipulate. Sonar paired with a 1kw ducer is amazing. I flushmount installed myself and it looks great and couldn't be easier. Directions for use and install are easy to grap and accurate.

FYI there is a software update free from garmin that adds Radar overlay to the 740s

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
I've had the unit on my last 2 boats. The Radar doesn't have overlay, so you can't see land and the rain at the same time. You don't know what your looking at.
As for the unit, it has a very easy user friendley touch screen. The unit has all most no lag, unlike some of the other manafactours, a big plus for zeroing in on bottom structures.
The G2 card really doesn't add much, other then google maps from above, and some other features, but I bought it
I use it with a Airmar P66 transducer, which is 600 watts, and is great for off shore bottom fishing here in Florida.
It is VERY EASY to navigate using the Garmin 740S. Touch the screen, a display pops up, and hit " Navigate to " and it's that easy. Once you do, it will show you at the top of the screen the distance from your target, as well as time of arrival pending on your speed.
I have a Walk Around boat, with a hard fiberglass top, and I flush mounted the unit, with no ext antenna, and it works great, with no loss of receiption.
The 740S ( S- meaning Sounder ), reads sonar, with buying the GSD22 box, and all the other networking componants the bigger units require to buy to read each device. It also reads Radar , and you can buy the GXM51 for weather, and satelite radio !
Over all this units has a ton of features without breaking the bank. I really wanted a bigger screen, like the 4208, but then when you add up the unit, GSD22, and everything else thats required to do what this unit does, your over double the price of this unit, for a extra inch and a quarter.
Great unit for the price, had 2 units over the past 2+ years, and never had a problem with them once!

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
Limiting installation to beyond 32 in. of a compass is a big negative. Main cable lock to unit won't connect. Mounting bracket is way too tight, resulting in difficulty adjusting and changing mounting angle. Software is very easy to use. Screen is clear and crisp.

Comments about GPSMAP 740s Chartplotter/Sounder with No Transducer:
I run a 1967 48' steel trawler, 30 tons. This was my first upgrade from the LORAN system - 1 year ago. Used it for a week straight up in the San Juan Islands, fog, etc. with few issues. Periodically, (3x's over a week), the unit would shut down for no reason. I cannot say if it is or is not the unit on my old boat. I also recently had to install a new SIMRAD AP35 autopilot. The chart plotter and autopilot work well together. Great display, excellent navigation and charts – appears very accurate. I added the exterior antenna due to steel bulkheads. Touch screen works well. At first, it was somewhat difficult to use the different tools and options and to program but with use, you get use to it and it actually is pretty easy. I did not yet add the BlueChart g2 Vision chip and feel it is fine without it.
