Description

Lightweight, fast-setting and reliable, this anchor gets fan mail

Fortress anchors let you choose between two shank angles to provide outstanding holding power in two common seabed types—a 32° angle for sand, or a 45° angle for soft mud. Precisely machined interlocking components made from high tensile aluminum-magnesium alloy have no welds to weaken the metal. The alloy is extremely strong, corrosion-resistant, nonmagnetic and light. Fortress anchors disassemble for storage, are easier to handle and lighter on the bow than steel anchors.

  • Style: Pivoting aluminum fluke
  • Material: High tensile aluminum-magnesium alloy
  • Application: Sand and mud
  • Pros: Changeable shank/fluke angle for extremely high holding power in hard sand and soft mud. Lightweight and strong. Disassembles for storage.
  • Cons: Relatively expensive. Limited holding in grass, rocks or clay
  • Warranty: Lifetime parts replacement

FX23 is a great anchor, but be prepared to have a hard time getting it out, particularly in mud. I had to finally winch it out. I do not have a windlass, but suspect the windlass could not get it out either.

I am going to get another Fortress, a 10 lb so that I can use that in lighter conditions. Otherwise I am afraid someday I will be leaving my FX23 on the bottom.

            Save your back!
No more busting a sweat to hump up a heavy anchor.
My fortress has never failed to hold my 32' CC firmly in any sea condition on any bottom. Definetly one of my best investments.

My back, shoulders and arms thank Fortress for their Aluminum Achors. I traded my 50Lb steel anchor for the Fortress and I could not believe the difference in not only weight...but the holding power. It also seems to dig in faster in the lake bottom. We don't use a windlass...so it's my back...or if we have quests...I can sometimes get a volunteer to hoist!

Light weight and stowable, we kept an FX 55 stowed in a locker as a storm anchor for our 38' cruisng cutter. Rigged with a few feet of chain and 200' of nylon rode it was easy for one person to set it out using the inflatable. Try doing that with an 80lb Luke sometime. It has held us securely in two named storms. Also, with the mud palms attached, we have used it in the soft bottoms often found on the ICW when our 45lb Bruce primary anchor wouldn't hold.

This anchor is so good at hooking we had to leave it in the bay in 60 feet of water. Even the Boat U.S. gentleman couldn't pull it up. He was so impressed he said "If a hurricane blew up on you, you may be at the bottom, but you'd be right there."

A little pricey, but it looks as nice as it hooks. Just be careful where you drop it. It may not want to come home with you.

Great anchor. High price but worth it for the holding capabilities. But don't ever kid yourself, you will never take the darn thing apart once getting it together.

I bought a Fortress FX-37 as a storm anchor for my boat after I used one for years during my service aboard a US Coast Guard 47-ft Motor Lifeboat. That anchor has held me in some horrific blows on the east coast and in bottoms that have ranged from soft mud to hard sand & clay. Definitely a terrific product.
