Comments about e Series e97 Network Multi function Display with Wireless Capability, 9" Diagonal, Sonar, No Chart:
The product did not work as advertised. The bluetooth and WiFi worked in the cabin, but not on deck.
We bought the Raymarine XM module. Even with a professional marine electronics tech working on it, the weather and music would not work.
Two weeks after we got it, while on a distance race, the GPS part of the E97 died for 36 hours. Fortunately,we had a Garmin handheld that worked fine. We also lost AIS and never had XM weather/music work. Again, we hired a well known electronics pro to work on it.
I also found out that the Raymarine customer service is worthless. When you call them, with the technician that you are paying by the hour, you get a recording that tells you to hold on for service, however, if no one answers in 20 minutes, that you should leave a message and someone will call you back within 24 hours. They never called on the first message, they did call back 3 hours later on the second message, after the tech left.
Another issue, if you zoom out 3 levels, the depths numbers disappear and it shows white anywhere that is over 60' deep. It shows blue for shallower water, but no numbers. Not good if you are trying to check location by depth on your paper chart or do a macro look ahead. You have to zoom in so far that you have no side reference.
We were not able to get the E97 to give data to the Oackham for more than a few minutes, then it would drop out. So no range, bearing or VMC on deck. And it routinely dropped data from the Oackham and then would set off an alarm that is high pitched and loud. The alarms are difficult, to impossible to turn off or down.
The touch screen was nice, but the number of characters for way point names is limited. So you write part of the name in notes.
Service and delivery comments:
West provide the equipment as fast as they could. The Chicago manager is great. Fortunately, he also took all of it back. I would like it if we could recover the money that we spent on the rest of the system and the money we wasted on the professional tech to attempt to get it to work.
