Used on a 47' sailboat, per many other posts, this pump just doesn't last more than about a season. When its working its great, but I'm on the fourth pump in five years. I buy the extended warranty each time just so there is no question about exchanging it. I'm going to try to see if I can get a credit on a different manufacturer this time.

When it worked it was a great unit. I eliminated my surge tank. Now it doesn't work (sudden overheating) and I need to find an alternative. I had other pumps that were still going after 5 years on a previous vessel.

I am about to find an alternative after the 3rd failure of this model - this season it's the sensor that has failed and the pump will not shut off - basically brings the system up to pressure and then runs forever at max current, max pressure with all water faucets closed - so manual operation from the breaker panel is needed for each faucet use until the unit is replaced. The pumps cannot actually "run dry" for longer than a minute or so (per the service dept.) - the marketing people put "runs dry" on the box but it's not really true;) So between pumping out the tank and burning up "running dry" and sensor failures, I'm going through one of these every season - not a pretty picture. Glad I'm doing my own installations. West Marine has been great, and I've also had one factory-replacement, but I need to find an alternative that is higher quality - at some point having "nice people" send us complete replacement units just doesn't make it in a world where "it just works" is the better answer.

Just installed the 12v 5.7 extreme this weekend in about 25 mins. This unit replaced a worn accumulator pump and a 4.0 gal/min Shurflo that worked fine. Just wanted to upgrade and reduce noise and cycling on/off with the tank that would not hold pressure. After 10-20 mins of operation, I could not believe how quiet the pump is. With normal ambient noises while in the slip i.e. TV, talking and outside noises, we cannot hear the pump running. The 4.0 Shurflo operating sound was prominent above ambient noise levels and frequently running to keep pressure in the accumulator tank. Getting rid of the accumulator pump and increasing flow rate slightly were a big pluses for me. Also took the opportunity to replace the pre-strainer with a new type Shurflo screw off which allows the strainer to be checked and cleaned without removing it from in-line FW system. Over-all very glad for the upgrades.

this is the third pump to fail within 16 months. preasure switch fails. Created so much preasure, it blew off my water heater t.p. valve. Big mess

This lake water pump is a great improvment over the unit that it replaced. Uses less energy, while delivering more water flow, higher pressure. Best of all worlds.

Have had three pumps, in a two year period.
First one melted the mechanical connection yet did not blow a fuse.
Second one quit working, unknownw reason.
Present one comes on and stays on until the pressure switch is tapped with a screwdriver handle,
needless to say it drained my water tanks, have had a horrible experience with this pump. West Marine has been outstanding.

I paid a lot for their "extreme" series pump and it died after two seasons(one year of use). West Marine replaced it witha new one, and it died after one season. Now the company says that although their warrant specifically states three years from date of manufacture, that the warranty only goes back to the original purchase date. West Marine is the only saving grace in this whole mess, as they are going to replace it with a comparable pump. From the looks of the other reviews I am not alone. Don't buy these pumps!!!

This is the fourth pump I have installed in 6 months. Works anywhere from one day to a few weeks but justs quits leaving you high and dry.
Can't believe they still sell it. It has happened to everyone I have talked with at the marina and I have talked with a lot of people and boat dealers with the same problem. ridiculous.
