Why does West Marine carry this thing? It's a total failure when it comes to simply pumping oil. It took over three hours to pump a mere 1.5 quarts out of 2 quarts total from an engine that is easy to work on.

I purchased this pump because I was looking for something easy to use and that would work effectively to pump the oil out of my mercruiser. This device is of terrible design, doesn't work properly, and would take a whole day to pump 5.5qts of oil. Bought it this morning and through it in the garbage this evening. [$] wasted, so save your money and go with the pump that has it's own reservoir for $80

This product works well. I do agree with many of the criticisms of the other buyers but the shortcomings they describe are easily overcome. The intake fitting on the pump does leak - this can be eliminated by installing a second "garden hose" type washer into the threaded coupling on the pump - this costs maybe $.10 at a hardwware store. In other words, use two garden hose washers rather than one. The output of the pump is also difficult to manage and can be messy because the output tube is short, stiff, and unwieldy. I remedied this problem by removing the output hose and attaching a 4' long piece of clear vinyl tubing of the proper diameter to the output fitting and securing it with a hose clamp - this lets me route the dirty oil into a remote container. I bought the tubing at [@]- it was probabaly $3 or $4. With the previous modifications the "messy" problem goes away. The pump is not fast, each stroke pumps maybe a cup of oil, but the pump works well, I can remove 6 quarts of oil in 5 minutes or less. I bought my pump nearly 20 years ago and it continues to function properly with no problems, it just needs the above modifications to eliminate the issues mentioned by the other buyers.

This pump is waaayyy tooo sloooww. I agree with all the other comments on here. Wish I had read the review before I bougth it. It took me approx. 2 hours to drain the oil. The dip stick hose kept detaching, therefore spilling oil on the engine compartment.

After 3 qts, oil started seeping out the body of the pump. I didn't expect it to be fast, but I did expect it to pump oil without spilling all over the place.

I bought this pump because it looked like it was a quality product and it was NOT MADE IN CHINA!!It worked for the first oil change, albeit slow.I pumped the bilges a few times and it was OK. Now it just won't work at all, even after careful cleaning of all components. Have very little use out of it. Very frustrating!

Requires a minimum of 4 hands and a lot of towels. Don't know what the pump was designed for but having a hard time believing it was to change oil.
