You never want to be surprised by the bottom. The Hawkeye digital depth sounder with auto-ranging and auto-sensitivity features is designed to give precise depth readings from 2.5 to 200 feet at speeds up to 63 mph. The D10D reacts instantly to changes in depth using a three-stage warning system. Comments about DF1000D Hawkeye Digital Depth Sounder:
I had to replace the factory installed depth finder on my 30ft cruiser so I already had the hole for the transducer, I just had to make it slightly bigger. Once I did that, install was easy and took about 2 hours.
After about 2 weeks of use, it appears to be accurate and working well. The display is large and easy to read. The only complaint I have is that the head unit could be a little less bulky. If you don't have several inches of depth behind the panel you are installing the head unit in, you may have trouble getting it to fit.

Comments about DF1000D Hawkeye Digital Depth Sounder:
Works as advertised and as it turns out, compatible with my existing through-hull transducer.
Service and delivery comments:
Patrick at Norcross sent me a pigtail to wire to my existing thru hull transducer when the in-hull transducer that came with the D10D didn't work for my application. There was no charge for this item and it worked perfectly. This saved me time and money. The service was prompt and right on.

Works great if you follow the instructions when mounting the transducer. I didn't because I thought I knew what I was doing and I too experienced the "---" readings. I opened the manual, reinstalled the transducer as explained, and I can't be happier.
