With the Garmin GPSMAP 640, you’ll get a full-featured marine chartplotter and an on-the-road navigator that comes ready to go with preloaded BlueChart® g2 data and City Navigator NT road maps for North America. The GPSMAP 640 comes standard with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and brilliant, high-resolution touchscreen display so you’ll always know the way whether you’re on land or at sea.
Powerful and Portable
Featuring a marine and an automotive mode, a high-sensitivity GPS receiver, and a rugged case with waterproof (IPX7) design, the GPSMAP 640 is ready for your next outing. The GPSMAP 640 effortlessly shifts gears between marine and automotive modes. When supported by the marine mount, you’ll have at-a-glance access to your marine data. And when placed in the automotive mount, the automotive mode is automatically activated and the GPSMAP 640 becomes a robust street navigator.
Designed to Shine
With a brilliant 5.2-inch WVGA touchscreen display, and an intuitive interface, you’ll have everything you need to navigate with confidence. The GPSMAP 640 comes preloaded with BlueChart g2 data and other surface features as well as City Navigator NA maps that include coverage maps for the United States, Puerto Rico and select parts of Canada.
Stay in the Know
The GPSMAP 640 can receive XM WX satellite weather data in marine mode and XM NavTraffic information in automotive mode with optional GXM 40 antenna and XM subscription. With all that information at your fingertips, you can avoid bad weather at sea or traffic tie-ups on the road. The GPSMAP 640 also supports XM audio so you’ll always have music to enjoy while you’re on the go.
By Sea
In marine mode, the GPSMAP 640 brings you tides and currents, depth contours, navaids, port plans and marine services via preloaded BlueChart g2 marine data. And with optional BlueChart g2 Vision cards, you’ll get 3-D MarinerEye view above the waterline and FishEye view below the waterline. You’ll also benefit from auto guidance technology that searches chart data to suggest the best passage. For a low cost option try BlueChart g2 cards. The GPSMAP 640 is also NMEA 0183 compliant, so it can be easily added to an existing marine network.
By Land
In automotive mode, the GPSMAP 640 announces street names with spoken turn-by-turn directions pulled from the preloaded City Navigator NT road maps for North America. And route planning has never been easier. Whether you’re searching for boat shops or bait shops, you’ll be able to plan the quickest and most efficient route. You can also create custom points of interests (POIs) and set up proximity alerts to let you know what’s in your path as you travel down the road.

Comments about GPSMAP 640 Marine & Automotive GPS, North America:
One complaint is that the unit apparently doesn't have a built-in beeper. So, in boating/marine mode the alarms: off course, anchor drag or alarm clock are useless unless you attach an external speaker.

Comments about GPSMAP 640 Marine & Automotive GPS, North America:
At first I liked this product. Easy to setup, simple and intuitive interface. But when I tried to use it, i found several major problems in software design. It looks like Garmin decided to save money on software development for this unit. Consider these;
1. In trip statistics you can't change fields. You get Average Speed and Trip average speed, but you can't get actual speed.
2. You can get a lot of numbers on the screen with charts, but you can't control what number you can see and where to place it.
3. In route mode, you can't manually switch to next waypoint. You have to come close to point, so it will switch automatically.
4. Some important numbers like VMG can only be seen in Route to mode, and not when you simply want to GoTo that point.
I can go on and on, but I think you got the point.

Comments about GPSMAP 640 Marine & Automotive GPS, North America:
Upgraded from a GPS 276 C Plus. Use primarily in the car but also in my Sea Ray 270. The user interface is certainly easier with the touch screen. Sometimes hard to read in bright sunlight (the 276C was brighter) but the battery life is much greater. Can hardly hear the voice commands at highway speeds. Certainly not with the sound system on. Overall, it's a good system. Paying another $300 for the sexy marine functions is grossly overpriced. Garmin needs to un-bundle them and sell them separately at a reasonable price.

Comments about GPSMAP 640 Marine & Automotive GPS, North America:
When I saw that this GPSmap 640 could have XM Mariner Weather with sea charts and be used as a road GPS with XM NavTrafic, I thought great, just what I'm looking for. Plus this would be a great backup GPS for my boat.
I researched all the information I could find, but information was not forth coming from Garmin or XM and the services they provide and how it applies with this unit.
After purchasing I found out you can only view weather radar in the boating mode. XM does not offer this in the driving mode. The NavWeather is for current condition, storm watch and forecast when driving. This is nothing even close to Mariner NEXRAD radar in boating mode.
I would think that Garmin and XM would have got their act together with this, but this is not the case. To me it would be a BIG selling (but rather expensive) feature if one could view NEXRAD radar when driving long distances or even driving across large metropolitan areas. You could predict traffic issues even before they start.
I'm a Garmin fan, but this product is not a dual purpose unit with XM subscriptions. Plus the unit has bad sunlight reflection issues as well. Only use this unit if it is shaded from the sun, or if the sun is not shining on the screen.
Heads up, this is not a Garmin network compatible devise which I knew before purchase. If it was, it would be another big selling feature.

Great product but impossible to read in sunlight...marginal on cloudy day, fine at nite. Needs different lighting or a major hood?
