I had a leak develop at the helm mount end of my Seastar Hydraulic steering unit. When you remove the steering wheel, the hub it mounts to, then the woodruff key, and finally the small cover that has three screws holding it on, you'll find what looks like an 0-ring, or a seal. That is your shaft seal, and it is a quad 0-ring (never heard of such a thing before this).
Installing was very straight forward. The kit comes with everything shown in the picture, but it does NOT include the three small screws that holds in the cap that covers the seal itself, so do NOT lose those.
The only issue I had was the hub beneath my steering wheel would not come off by hand like it did before. I assume I over tightened the large nut that holds the hub when I last looked at it.
You may need a pulley puller to pull the hub off of the shaft (if applicable). Other than that, standard hand tools will be fine, and maybe a pick of some sort to get the old seal out.
Installed it in about 10 minutes, and the unit does not leak anymore. Well worth the money, in fact shipping was more expensive. They also give you new nuts and washers to replace the ones that actually mount this unit to your helm/console. I didn't change these, I didn't see any need to.
For anyone curious, my hydro steering is mounted on a 1994 Ranger bass boat. If you have a leak at the hydro steering unit mounted to your outboard, you need a different, more expensive kit that includes a tool.
