Description

Perfect for daysailers up to 3,000 pounds, tenders, dinghies and duck boats, this motor sets a new standard for quiet, lightweight and ecologically-friendly propulsion. With a built-in ultra-efficient, lithium-manganese battery pack, Torqeedo Travel outboards deliver power and range. (Range varies depending on speed and boat type. At full throttle run time is about 30 minutes, slower speeds result in up to 6 hours or more!) Improved efficiency means users enjoy up to 30% more power compared to previous Torqeedo models. Additionally, new models are waterproof to IP67 standards. Ease-of-use is enhanced by a four-function display that shows percent of battery power remaining, speed through water and range remaining at current speed. Speed and range are calculated using an integrated GPS-receiver. An audible signal warns you when the battery charge drops to 30%. The smallest carbon footprint of any propulsion motor.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

When you are tired or in ruff conditions you can remove battery first: Thus allowing you to move a motor that barely weighs 20 lbs. This also applies if you have small storage areas. Gasoline outboards are having enormous issues with current fuels making these motors, comparably, extremely reliable. My range with an 8' Avon (2 adults and 2 tots) is over 25 miles at 4 knots. Drops to about 16 at 5 knots. A canoe with a motor mount would easily go faster with a range over 30 miles. I was tempted to rate this motor a 5 but believe the new propane motors may prove to be better investment since it is easy to carry extra fuel in those 16 oz. bottles.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I am using the 1003 to move a Catalina 22 sailboat in and out of the marina. The marine is on lake Dillon in Colorado, a high altitude mountain lake that also serves as a water reservoir for the city of Denver. Therefore it is great that the motor does not pollute the water/air.
The Catalina 22 is close to the recommended upper limit boat size for this motor but the 1003 moves the boat very well, and the range is quite sufficient for the purpose.
Although some details still might be improved such as, for example, the cable connections, I strongly recommend this motor for sailors with boats up to 3000 pounds or so, just as already suggested by the manufacturer.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

A good product whose time has come but I think it needs further development. It is efficient and quiet. I like not having to carry fuel. the GPS is a great feature. I use it for our Bauer 10 dinghy and it has more than enough power. Range is good if you keep the speed down. However it is not as rugged as a tradional outboard and it does not feel as well balanced. You have to be careful aligning the threads when connecting the plugs and this could be difficult to do on a bad weather day. The tiller has particularly light duty mounting design that I damaged on the first windy day. Fortunatly I was able to reinforce it to be stronger than original.
The motor and accessories are more expensive than I think they need to be but I suppose there is a price to pay for leading technology. In spite of my comments I do feel satisfied with the purchase and enjoy using the motor. I have recomended it to others but with the above caveats.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I have the 1003. I love the power and battery life. I bought a second battery at West marine. However, this thing is constantly breaking down. E-30 (cable loose) or E-45 over torque. Best advise I can give is get a good paddle. You will need it.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

Motor is fine Skeg a little flimsy , Friend damaged unit , when a diagnosed problem a stripped a small screw seat on underwater motor pod, a $30.00 ?, part. when i contacted torqeedo I had 2 options buy a new motor for 1,000.00 or take it to a service center where they could replace the part. The motor is not new and iI don't feel like spending 600.00 on shipping and service for a cheep part they they could sell me. Every car dealer sells parts to the public and not just their own repair center :-( sad , now ill have to put her back in water with 3 screws instead of 4 and pray.

Comments about Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

Impressive quality and engineering. I use it on a Watertender 9.9 and my expectations have been exceeded. Range and speed are very good. I replaced a 4hp four stroke and really like a gas/oil free 30lb motor. I ran it several hours, approx. 2-4 miles and got home with 50% battery remaining. I am planning on adding a solar panel to extend the range and recharge while at the sand bar. Considering it's weight at 29.5 lbs and range of 2-16 NM depending on speed, no oil changes, water pump impellers, thermostats, tune-ups, flushing, not having to start & warm-up, not having to reach back to shift F-N-R, only twisting the throttle. This is the perfect outboard for 2 - 4HP applications. I Love It !
