Description

A West Marine Innovative Product and awarded Green Product of the Year in 2011!

Prevents damage to fish by allowing release back down to full depth without venting of the fish’s swim bladder. Used in conjunction with a handline, rod and reel combo or downrigger, the design utilizes a weight which holds the tool’s spring-loaded jaws securely, but safely on the fish’s mouth, until, when it reaches the bottom, spring tension is relieved, causing the jaws to open and release the fish. Eliminates unnecessary handling and potential damage to the fish’s gills or protective slime coat. Anodized aluminum body, brass swivels and pins, PVC-coated jaws. Sold without weights for use with sinkers appropriate to the weight of fish being released.

  • Scissor type jaws extend from 1" to 3"
  • 12"L x 1 3/16"dia.

Comments about Catch & Release Recompression Tool:

I use a one pound weight on the bottom of the rig and it takes the fish back to the bottom and when it hits the bottom it releases the fish unharmed. No lip piercing as with some other devices.

You definitely don't need 5lbs of weight to use this. Try 1LB, use a little common sense and it works fine. Helps rockfish get back to the bottom and have a better chance for survival if they are too small to keep.

Comments about Catch & Release Recompression Tool:

directions do not recommend how much weight needs to be added to the device in order to hold the fish in the clamp. I used 5 pounds of weight so that the clamp on the fishes jaw would be firm. I tried it on 3 different fish and each time the fish came free from the clamp after going down only 30 feet or so. Now try to reel up this device with 5 pounds of weight attached to it. It is like reeling up an anchor. Its a great concept but the device sucks.
