I bought a Spot Satellite Messanger for a sailboat delivery up the coast of Mexico. I had read that this device had battery life issues, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I'd put in two fresh batteries, power up the unit, send a text message, and turn it off. After the second night each time, the communicator would blink red (low battery). I had to burn through two AA batteries every two nights!
The unit was small enough, however, to fit inside the pocket of my West Marine offshore vest, so I would have been able to use it in an overboard or sinking situation, if only I could have relied on the battery life. All I could think about was being out there bobbing around with this Spot unit and dead batteries.
If having a reliable form of SOS communication is important, I'd consider an ACR PLB instead.

Saw some poor reviews on Spot and Spot Connect. Our family owns three Spot devices and have been very satified, although there is a learning curve. And the new 1.2 Spot Connect app is very cool. We like the Map & Go feture.

I just have to say breifly of all the trouble I have had with this thine:
=hasn't worked during heavy rains and clouds - when
I need it the most
=hard for bluetooth to stay linked up
=inside store rep in Medford, Oregon had no clue about product - then could not even get his rep on the phone for support

Purchased item for Mom
's birthday, who is a worldwide sailor. She travells across the world, and I know SPOT doesnt work everywhere, but when I needed it work...reality set in...
Took very very long time creating the account, customer care had to get item to sync up since unit froze out of the box. and Connect often lost its bluetooth connection - even after we downloaded the software upgrade.
LEDs were a bit confusing - and many of the transmitted messages did not make through.

I am an outdoor person and go out of cell reach at least once a week so this thing is a life-saver. If I locked my keys in my car, get bit by a snake or something horrible happens, I can let my family know and send for help. This device lets me go on solo backpacking trips with no worry.....from my girlfriend. I can now "check in" and even type a custom message on my iphone. Great for getting picked up after a trip, or getting done early.
