Comments about TP10 Tiller Pilot:
After many years sailing with an antique AutoHelm tiller pilot it finally gave up the ghost this spring. Faced with the decision as to whether to replace it with a Raymarine or Simrad I went with the TP10 because of the simplicity of the interface. With my old tiller pilot I would just make incremental adjustments to the course by twisting a big knob one direction or the other a fraction of an inch. I would never take my eyes off the water or trust the "other" pilot under any circumstances as it is a good recipe for disaster in the Pacific NW. Yes, I have a GPS, but I know where I'm going and how to get there; I don't need the auto-tiller to do that for me, thank you.In any case, I haven't used the Simrad yet, but it seems very sturdy and promises to have the simplicity of use that I was seeking. The reason I've down-graded it is that I was very surprised to find that the box it comes in contains practically none of the parts required for a proper installation. There is the socket to mount it on, and the pin to attach it to the tiller - that's it: no electrical connector, no extension brackets, no mounting pedestals. What's worse is that a thorough search of Simrad's web site and the Internet suggests that such parts are not available ANYWHERE in NA.In my case this may not be a significant issue as I have parts from my AutoHelm installation that I can probably re-use. Also, I suspect that the parts Raymarine sells will probably work ok with the Simrad. But is this insane or what? Here's your [$] auto-tiller, good luck finding parts for the installation!
