WEST MARINE Grade 43 (G4) Hot-Dip Galvanized High-Test Chain

An excellent choice for ground tackle, Grade 43 chain is about 35% stronger than conventional BBB chain which allows you to save weight without sacrificing anchoring security. In the hot-dip process this chain is specially shot-peened before galvanizing to create the longest lasting protection against corrosion. Two-year guarantee against rusting. Made in the USA of high-carbon steel, it resists wear, making it a good choice for abrasive anchoring situations. With links slightly longer than BBB, it is the chain specified for use with many of the windlasses we sell. Two-year warranty. We sell Acco chain by the foot in lengths up to the size of the standard pack.

      Comments about Grade 43 (G4) Hot-Dip Galvanized High-Test Chain:

The chain is just what I needed to replace old one. One thing however. Why is the process of picking up the ship to store item so difficult. The rep seems to always have a problem locating the purchase record and it often does not reflect the sale price if it was indeed on sale. If the item is in stock at the store, why not just buy online and pickup up from store stock as so many other retailers do. Just asking.

Use Acco G40 5/16" for 12yrs in Saltwater. Took 6 years for 1st rust to show.

Bought a piece of West Marine G40 5/16" . With 1yr in saltwater and 1yr in fresh, the galvanize is gone on much of the change.

Same basic use on both, but the WM galvanizing just is not holding up. Should offer Acco in G40 grade too.

Comments about West Marine 7/16" Grade 43 (g4) Chain, 7200lb. Swl, 21,600lb. Breaking Strength, 2.05lb./ft., 300' Max. Length, Sold By The Foot:

We've had ACCO G40 for about 6 years and it's finally worn thin enough so we're replacing it. We live aboard a 50', 40,000 lb. monohull and are at anchor every single day we're not on passage. It's nice to know that, after the warranty has run out and the links in the middle of the chain start to wear thin, our anchor chain has the strength we need to hold our boat in a blow.

Two negatives: (1) is listed by ACCO as a positive: This chain is lighter than other chains of the same wire diameter, because of the longer links. That means a flatter catenary, especially in shallow water where a surge might pick our chain off the bottom but wouldn't lift the same length of BBB. (2) If you regalvanize it using a hot process, you risk losing the extra strength of the tempered steel in G40 chain.

Why try to save a buck or two on lines or chains that protect your investment?? Save on something less important. For the sake of a few dollars you could lose your boat or worse. Always go with the best for mooring chains, and good lines and you'll sleep at night when the wind blows. Your boat will be there in the morning.
