After scraping 30 years of hard anti foul off my hull off my sailboat hull, I swore "never again."

I love this paint, as it can be power washed right off, leaving a bare hull from which I can start from scratch. With ablatives, I think it's the thickness that determines length of the application as much as anything else. It takes a little under one gallon to apply one coat to my bottom. With the price point of PCA, I can apply three coats full coats and the remaining on the leading edges of the hull for extra build up. It lasts a long time and costs much less than the competition.

West Marine PCA bottom paint

I applied this paint expecting a long service life. Two seasons later, This bottom paint is falling off in areas about the side of your hand.

When I first applied 3 years ago , I called the 800 number on the back of the label with a question...but to my surprise, Petite answered. I said I was calling West Marine about PCA Gold and the Petite guy says "oh, that's our Ultima SR 40." That was a nice surprise! :) So when it went on sale, I picked up 3 gallons. A marina south of Annapolis advised their tip of using alternating colors for different coats so you can see how much you're wearing, so I alternated red, blue, red.....3 years later I'm still on the first layer.....
Last year was intense muscle growth in the Chesapeake, and we weren't able to go out as much as we wanted (when do we ever?!), so we got a LOT of muscle growth, but I was AMAZED it ALL sluffed right off with a wide paint scraper with no effort at all.
Remember before you critisize PCA that ablative won't completely prevent growth, you actually have to SAIL so the growth strips off by water resistance.
I'll keep using my secret Petite, but since I've got two more coats below this one, I guess I won't be buying anytime soon! :)

Bottom was fouled after 3 months. The yard wanted to charge a extra fee for a short haul.

27 ft Cruiser, salt water. Boat stays in the water for 9 months. Applied 1 coat over a more expensive ablative paint and then doubled up near the stern where it gets more wear. Stays clean throughout the season. Beginning of the second year I applied touch up where needed, finishing off the gallon. This year will receive a full coat. Very happy with the result. Does wipe off on your hand and scrub brush in the water.
