The three year warranty and display features alone make this radio well worth its price. I looked at other more expensive brands, and much preferred the display of this one to the others. When changing channels, I agree that the display is small, but the normal display makes that small inconvenience worth it. Any problems described by others should be covered by the warranty, and West Marine has been very responsive to me in the past with issues on other items. I recommend this radio as a basic unit with some advanced features. The only issue I have with it is the annoyance of the "input position" alarm. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it.

Comments about West Marine VHF580 Fixed Mount VHF Radio:

I saw the bad reviews on this radio, but I have had no problems at all with mine. I use it with a 3' stainless antenna and can consistently hit an automated radio check station 27 miles away over land. I've had it installed in my boat for about 2.5 years. The only thing I have found is that the red numbers on the 16/9 buttons have faded almost to white. Other than that, it's worked perfectly and has good clear sound. I have it paired with a Garmin GPS and it was simple to wire, with good installation instructions. For the money, it seems like a fine radio.

Comments about VHF580 Fixed Mount VHF Radio:

Disappointed in non-durability. The radio still turns on, but the display screen is dead after 1 year in my express cruiser. West Marine has indicated they will replace under warranty if I can find my receipt. Otherwise functioned fine.

Had this radio professionally installed with my new boat and the speaker went out 2 1/2 years later.
I will say customer service at West Marine was fantastic! They did honor the 3 year warranty and replaced the radio with no hassle.

On opening the box there were no insstructions. On turning on the set it repeatedly says no MMSI entered but there are no instructions as to how to enter MMSI or even what MMSI is. This is terrible product support.

Received radio when I purchased a nearly new boat. Radio was wired into boat by a certified electrician and worked until speaker died after <20 hours of operation. No local repair shops would fix. Would not recommend.

This radio works well. DSC is a big advantage, but requires some skill with installation. Once installed, the automatic broadcast of vessel position and identification is very useful for safety and communicating with other vessels. We connect the radio to our Vesper 850 AIS unit for location and keep additional hand held radios on board for redundancy.
