Cost me a good rod and reel

Went back and forth between this and the more expensive brand. Finally decided on these, since they were just to be used on my poling platform. My mistake. Holder broke off from the mount, and the rod and reel (and holder) haven't been seen since.

I purchased these two weeks ago and used them for two weekends. At the end of the third day of use the holder separated from the bracket and my rod and real and this piece of junk all fell off into the sea.

The materials looked Ok and I figured how bad could they be? Well now I know. They are not even good enough to use once. The remaining holder is also loose.

Perhaps these could be disassembled and re-assembled with locktight. But I'm going to take them back and slap them down on the counter and ask for my money back and how they intend to make up for the loss of my gear.

Take it from me. This is not my first experience with a West Marine branded product failing catastrophically while still brand new. I don't know what I was thinking buying another.

Don't ever buy West Marine branded products. I know I will never make that mistake again.

Both broke - one with a rod and reel. Don't purchase these.

Was easy to install, used thread lock on the bolts that clamps to the rails. First one fell off within 1 hour. Thought that was weird, second one fell 30 min later. Now I'm mad, third one took a drink along with my fishing pole and rod. I bought 3 of the pair, the other 3 survived but very loose. The inner bolts that connects the clamp to the holder is cheap. Hoping to return all three but what about my avet and seeker. I won't buy another west marine product again, I suggest you don't either. I learned the hard way, I'm just saying.

I bought a couple of these a year or two ago. They broke easily and really are not heavy duty enough to hold a decent salt water rod (and definitely not a net). I threw mine away and bought much higher quality rod holders (of course for much more money). Like many things in life, if you buy the least expensive one, it winds up costing you more in the long run.

Bought the twin pack and lost one overboard on the first run of the season, wasn't even using it at the time, it just fell off. Took what was left of it back to West and they said I must have not installed it correctly, yeah right.
They did offer to give me a new one at their "employee discount" price, cost me an additional $10.
Re-installed with red threadlock and it has remained tight, but I only use it for very light tackle drift fishing now. BTW - a couple of months later I got a letter from West reminding me to use threadlock on it.
                  But they look great :)

Purchased to install on my Hewes poling platform but the conduit that the platform is made from is too large and they will not fit... Otherwise it looks like a ok rod holder (I don't think I would want to troll with one...)

Very nice stainless steel design with matching hardware. I mounted these on my bow rail and they make great addition to my spread when using the outriggers. Adjustable design also allows them to be used as a flatline or a down line also when trolling or drift fishing. Fit my 1" rails perfectly and very secure.

Comments about Stainless Steel Clamp On Rod Holder:

Two weeks ago, the rod took a hit and the holder tube separated from the base clamp. The clamp is still on the stanchion nice and tight, but the rod holder tube and $500 worth of Penn rod and reel are in the ocean somewhere.

If you use this, be sure your rod is additionally secured. The holder showed no signs of fatigue/rust/etc., it just broke. The rod had 40 lb line on the spool and we were trolling a lightweight skirt at about 6 knots. Seas were flat calm.

The holder was only 2 years old.

                            VERY POOR CONSTRUCTION.
