WEST SYSTEM#207 Special Coating Hardener

WEST SYSTEM

#207 Special Coating Hardener

This hardener was especially developed for use with WEST SYSTEM Brand 105 Resin in coating applications where an exceptionally clear, moisture-resistant, natural wood finish is desired. Cures to a light amber color, similar to traditional spar varnishes. An ultraviolet inhibiting additive improves the resistance of a WEST SYSTEM 105/207 mixture to sunlight, but the cured epoxy surface will still require the additional protection of a quality UV-filtering varnish. 207 is designed to self level for smooth finishes, and to wet-out and bond fabrics. Although it provides good physical properties for general bonding applications, it is more difficult to thicken and less cost effective for this purpose than 205 or 206 Hardeners. It’s also used for laminating veneers where bleed through at joints may be exposed to sunlight.

Comments about #207 Special Coating Hardener:

I used this product to coat the white oak cheeks on my sailboat rudder. Sanded the wood, cleaned with acetone, breifly heated with heat gun, mixed small batch well in paper cup, applied with a squeegy and pressed into wood grain. I reapplied a few more coats when the epoxy started to kick - no sanding between coats. After everything hardened, I drilled slightly oversized holes for the bronze through-bolts, filled with thickened expoxy, and after it set drilled appropriate bolt holes. I then covered everything with a few coats of varnish to provide UV protection and assembled. I lightly sand and reapply varnish once a year. After three years, the cheeks still look great!

this is the first time i have used real epoxy resin, and i was expecting it to be super difficult. but it went on clean, dried slow enough for me to work with it. doesn't smell bad like the bondo stuff.

I'm using this product with 105 resin and carbon fiber cloth. I like that it's water clear. It's as easy to use as any hardener/resin system. I have not had the problem of leaking cans that another reviewer noted.

Comments about #207 Special Coating Hardener:

better than advertised. only downside is that the cans leak and this stuff isn't cheap. maybe go to plastic packaging like some of the others. 4 out of 4 cans of the 207 have leaked. one can leaked almost the whole contents before i found it. cans arent damaged. they just leak. [...]. The product itself is excellent.

We use West System epoxy to embed small objects in wood. The new formula is water clear, and always provides a durable casting.
