WEST SYSTEM
G/Flex® Epoxy

G/flex 655 is a new epoxy introduced by WEST SYSTEM in mid-June 2007. G/flex is a tough, resilient epoxy engineered for a superior grip to metals, plastics, glass, masonry, fiberglass, and wet and difficult-to bond woods. G/flex 655 Thickened Epoxy Adhesive comes with a thickening agent already added. G/flex offers important features:

  • Toughness and Flexibility G/flex has been toughened. This gives G/flex the ability to make structural bonds that can absorb the stresses of expansion, contraction, shock, and vibration. G/flex is resilient and impact resistant. With a modulus of elasticity of 150,000 psi (WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin/205 Hardener has a modulus of elasticity of 450,000 psi), G/flex is more flexible and can deflect further than WEST SYSTEM 105/205, while being much stiffer than typical adhesive sealants.
  • Bonds to wet and damp surfaces G/flex has the ability to glue damp woods. It can be used on wet surfaces, even underwater when applied with specific techniques.
  • Excellent adhesion to hard-to-bond woods G/flex adheres tenaciously to difficult-to-glue hardwoods, both tropical and domestic varieties. This is important since many of the exotic and tropical species now being used to replace traditional woods present bonding challenges.
  • Bonds well to a variety of materials G/flex is ideal for bonding a variety of materials, including dissimilar ones. G/flex has a superior grip so that it can be used to bond to metals, plastics, glass, masonry, and fiberglass. G/flex is ideal for repairs to aluminum boats and polyethylene and ABS canoes and kayaks. It can also be used to wet out and bond fiberglass tapes and fabrics.
  • Ease of use G/flex is a simple two-part epoxy system. Resin and hardener are mixed in a 1:1 mix ratio by volume. G/flex provides a relatively long open working time of 45 minutes. It cures in 7-10 hours and can be used in cool temperatures. Because it is simple to mix and use, G/flex is an excellent starting point for customers new to epoxy use.
  • Versatility G/flex can be modified with WEST SYSTEM fillers and additives if you need to meet particular bonding needs. Adding G/flex to other WEST SYSTEM epoxies can improve their toughness and flexibility.

Had a small air leak in an inflatable. Tried two different glues with a patch. Followed instructions. Air found a way to blow out of the patch. Then I used West Epoxy G Flex. Worked great! Used it to glue the soles back on my girlfriend's cowboy boots , fix my son's surfboard, and dozens of other little repairs. Good stuff. The small tubes go a long way.

                Comments about G/Flex Epoxy:

First, full disclosure - I am a West Marine associate. That being said, I use G-Flex all the time on our boat. This is a tough product. A few years ago I used it to fill a hinge screw hole that had partially stripped; I inserted the screw before the resin completely cured. Later, I wanted to replace the hinge with a stainless steel version and broke the screw driver tip trying get the screw out. That sold me on the product.

                      Comments about G/Flex Epoxy:

This is great stuff, but personally I think its a little too runny. It really needs to be thicker. I used it on a vertical crack and it was hard to get it to stay in the crack before setting up. It also dries a little yellow. After it dries, its a great product.
I would recommend it only for certain projects.

                      Comments about G/Flex Epoxy:

I used G/Flex 655 on a 1950's aluminum boat that was neglected and abused. I lost track of how many rivets where leaking and seams that leaked on the old girl, it was like turning on a faucet it leaked everywhere. I turned this boat into a water foul blind in the fall and a fishing boat for in the summer and wanted to use the correct product the first time and only time to seal the leaks. G/Flex 655 did the job. I cant say enough about this epoxy , easy to mix the resin and hardener because of its one to one ratio . Its 45 minute application time is awesome as I wasn't rushed at all applying the epoxy , plenty of time to heat the rivets , apply the epoxy , followed up with a heat gun . I could actually see the epoxy flow in around the rivets and seams and flatten out on the surface of the boat , you just don't want to over heat the epoxy . Now, this old boat doesn't leak a drop of water anywhere below the water line !!!! This is an amazing epoxy !!!!
