          Comments about Freedom HF 1000 & 1800 Inverter/Chargers:

I installed the HF1000 on my boat over the weekend. So far, it is inverting and charging properly. The install went very smooth. This unit was a replacement for an older inverter/charger that gave up the ghost. This unit is half the size and 1/3 the weight of the one it replaces, and is still rated at 1000w output. It powered my small microwave while in inverter mode without breaking a sweat. I see all the bad reviews about poor quality and not so great customer service, so I bought an extended warranty from West Marine. Any issues within 4 years, I can return it and get a replacement, no questions asked, no dealing with Xantrex.

The only complaints I have are that the "handy" mounting template was not so handy because the mounting holes did not line up accurately. Check your unit against the template before you use it to drill holes! Also, the unit is slightly noisy when charging, especially in bulk mode. Not a huge deal for me because it's installed in a compartment which mutes it considerably.

I do want to rebut a previous review. On other reviewer stated that the unit goes into inverter mode when shore power is interrupted and that there was no way to disable that function. There are instructions in the user manual on how to disable the feature.

          Comments about Freedom HF 1000 & 1800 Inverter/Chargers:

I initially purchased the Fredom HF 1800 in March of 2012. The first unit failed within four months. The second unit failed within ten months and almost ruined my AGM batteries due to overcharging. Luckilly I had purchased the West Marine extended warranty and was able to exchange the second unit for a MasterVolt.

Also, the tech support through Xantrex is horrendous as well. Thank you West Marine for making this right!

          Comments about Freedom HF 1000 & 1800 Inverter/Chargers:

bought the 1800 hf last August 2012 have never had it working right. The control panel is hard to adjust settings. It can be turn off but it will take about 20 min to figure it out. the instructions in the manual are useless. I have sent it for repair which I had to pay my own shipping. As yet I have not heard back from Xantrex. oh yeah if you send back to them for warranty work and they deem nothing is wrong with the unit you must pay a $139.00 bench fee and the shipping costs if you want back. Do your self a favour either spend less money for an inverter or buy something other than Xantrex

This product is poor quality, won't last , and once the warranty is up the units cannot be fixed.
You are better off purchasing a much cheeper product because in the long run you will be better off.

I used this as a shore power charger and 12v to 120v inverter on a 250ah 8D AGM battery. It worked great and charged well initially. The charger failed in less than a year and drained the battery ($600). The Battery, also new, has never recovered from the full discharge. Xantrex has not returned calls or emails to troubleshoot their product.

                        Comments about Freedom HF 1000 & 1800 Inverter/Chargers:

I have had the HF 1000 installed on my sailboat for 2 1/2 years. All the AC outlets on the boat can be driven from Shore Power or the Inverter.

Charging is automatic whenever the boat is plugged into shore power

A display / control panel can be remotely mounted for ease of use.

The unit works as designed but one design feature is very bad in my opinion. When shore power is int erupted, the unit automatically switches to inverter mode. So any AC appliance you have plugged in is now running off your house batteries. This may be ok if the interruption is brief and/or you are aboard. However if the interruption is long term and if you are not on board, the house batteries can take a big hit. There is no way the user can disable this feature.

While I generally like the HF 1000, this auto switching feature is a fatal flaw and I would not recommend this unit.
