Support West Marine’s BlueFuture Program Before the National Safe Boating Week Fundraiser Ends Monday

Through May 29, $2 from every West Marine-brand life jacket purchased in stores and on westmarine.com will benefit the nonprofit BlueFuture Fund.

Watsonville, CA, May 25, 2017 - Just a few days remain to support West Marine’s BlueFuture Fund through the safety-inspired National Safe Boating Week fundraiser. Through Monday, May 29, the manufacturers of West Marine life jackets will donate $2 for every West Marine-brand life jacket purchased in stores and online at westmarine.com (up to $35,000) to the nonprofit fund.

West Marine’s BlueFuture initiative supports a broad range of nonprofit, community-based organizations dedicated to providing young people with access to the water — and with the education and equipment they need to spend time on and around the water safely. According to Lindsey Johnson, West Marine’s Director of Communications, funds raised during National Safe Boating Week 2017 will directly support the fall grant cycle.

“We’re encouraging our friends and supporters across the country to visit their nearest West Marine stores or jump online this week and over the holiday weekend,” Johnson says. “Not only do we want to make sure everyone has appropriate safety gear as the summer boating season gets started, we’re hoping to reach that $35,000 goal.

“If we do, then together we have fully funded 23 of our 25 fall grants,” she continues. “That’s a big deal to the hard-working, community-based groups we support through BlueFuture, and to the hundreds of young people who have access to the water through their recreational and educational programs.”

The world’s premier Waterlife Outfitter remains committed to encouraging safe, responsible boating. Each year, it commemorates National Safe Boating Week with a dedicated BlueFuture fundraiser, and it continues to join forces with the National Safe Boating Council to raise awareness for its North American Safe Boating Campaign. The council provides safe boating resources online at www.safeboatingcounci.org

In additional to National Safe Boating Week, West Marine will conduct two additional in-store fundraisers this year to support BlueFuture: World Oceans Day in June; and the Month of Giving in December. The fund also encourages year-round donations through its website, www.westmarine.com/BlueFuture.

The BlueFuture Fund is a donor-advised fund through the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz. All donations are fully tax-deductible, and twice each year, West Marine awards grants to worthy nonprofit organizations across North America. These much-needed funds allow community-based groups to provide scholarships, purchase new equipment, maintain staff, add programs and so much more.
