16th Annual Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race presented by West Marine set for June 17 in Capitola, Calif.

Annual Paddle Race in Memory and Honor of Jay Moriarity Legendary Surfer and Paddler

2017 will be the First Year the Race is a Qualifying Race for a Spot on the USA National Paddleboard Team

Watsonville, CA, June 6, 2017 - West Marine, the world’s premier Waterlife Outfitter, is thrilled to announce its sponsorship of Northern California’s most popular paddling event - the 16th Annual Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race (Jay Race) in Capitola, Calif. A high caliber event for paddlers, participants gather annually to remember Jay and paddle their hearts out in his honor. All proceeds benefit the Jay Moriarity Foundation to raise funds for Angel Warriors and other ocean-related programs. West Marine’s CEO, Matt Hyde, will compete for the second time. Recent winner (fifth year in a row) of the West Marine Carolina Cup, Annabel Anderson, will also be in attendance and competing.

The event is a one-day paddleboard competition. Competitors paddle either a 12-mile or two-mile course at Capitola Beach, 201 Esplande, Capitola, Calif. USA Surfing has confirmed the 2017 USA Paddleboard Championship Events and Team Trials will be held in conjunction with the Jay Race this year for the first time ever.

The winners of the open men’s and open women’s divisions will be able to represent the USA at the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championships in Voruper & Copenhagen, Denmark, Sept. 1-10, 2017.

“The Jay Race is one of the very few marquee races for paddleboarders, the type no one wants to miss,” according to USA Surfing’s Executive Director, Greg Cruse. “By teaming with the wonderful group at the Jay Moriarity Foundation, we can let the paddlers attend a race they honor while giving them a shot at making our national team. It’s a win/win,” he adds.

This is West Marine’s first year presenting the Jay Race which includes a Long Course, Short Course, Waterman Challenge and a Kids “Mini Jay Race.” The check in/pre-registration kickoff party takes place Friday, June 16 at West Marine’s Santa Cruz location from 4-8 pm at 2460 17th Avenue in Santa Cruz. To further support the mission of the Jay Moriarity Foundation, West Marine will donate $10 from each Ultra-Slim Manual Inflatable Life Jacket Belt Pack sold at the kick-off event.

In addition to the planned Jay Race festivities, event goers will also have the opportunity to rent Lahui Kai SUPs and all proceeds will be donated to the Jay Moriarity Foundation. Lahui Kai will also donate one rental board to the Jay Race Board and West Suit Raffle. Raffle tickets are $5 each.
