A Little Bit About Boat Battery Switches

A boat battery switch enables you to select which battery (or both) receive charging current and which battery runs the loads onboard. A desirable feature to look for in a marine battery switch is an alternator field disconnect, which protects your boat’s alternator if you happen to move the switch to the Off position while the engine is running. On/Off battery switches are used for single-battery installations. Most however function as a battery selector switch, with four positions: “Battery 1”, “Battery 2”, “Both” and “Off”.
