Does this shirt being made from organic cotton really make a difference?

It does if not using toxic pesticides and saving 27 gallons of water is important to you.

Patagonia's Flying Fish Organic Shirt is made from ringspun, long-staple (exceptionally fine and strong) organic cotton. This lightweight shirt uses no toxic pesticides, benefits soil quality and biodiversity and saves 27 gallons of water compared to a conventional cotton shirt. But that's not where the responsible manufacturing ends. The original artwork across the chest by Canadian artist Geoff McFetridge depicting a flying fish holding Poseidon's fork is screen-printed using inks that are PVC- and phthalate-free. Did we also mention these shirts are sewn at a Fair Trade Certified™ factory? (More on that below.) 4-oz 100% organic cotton ringspun jersey. Imported.

The Design

The crewneck styling and taped shoulder seams allow for greater comfort and fit retention. Another design feature Patagonia added is sturdy side seams that keep your shirt from twisting and shrinking when washed.

The Fabric

The Flying Fish Organic shirt is made from ringspun, long-staple organic cotton that’s sourced from member farms of the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals with methods that support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water. The yield is high, and the quality of the cotton is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton. So why isn't all cotton grown organically then? Well organic farming is more time consuming, requires more knowledge and skill and (the kicker) costs more. But those of us who are committed to protecting our environment think it’s worth it.

Fair Trade Certified™ Sewing

What makes a factory Fair Trade Certified? Rigorous standards for health and safety, respect for the environment, no child or forced labor, maternity and paid leave, community empowerment and additional money back to workers. Patagonia pays a premium for every Fair Trade Certified item that carries their label. That extra money goes directly back to the factory workers, and they decide how to spend it. They can allocate it as a cash bonus, use it for a collective social investment or both.
