West Marine can help you stay safe on the water with our large collection of safety gear and safety electronics. EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) and PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons) are some of the important safety equipment you should have on your boat. These electronics will send out an alert to rescue services if you are in danger on the water. EPIRBs come in two categories: Type I EPIRBs have an automatic activation and Type II EPIRBs have a manual activation. Both types must be registered in order to give every boater a unique ID that will be sent out in an emergency. They should be kept in a known and easy-to-access but protected place on the boat or in a ditch bag. PLBs, are to be kept on your person and may or may not require registration. Many include strobe lights and have both automatic and manual activation methods. These improve chance of rescue by sending out your location and improving location visibility for search and rescue.
