Fender whips, sometimes called fender lines, are used to secure fenders to a boat. Fenders are protective cushions placed between a boat and a dock or another vessel to prevent damage to both the boat and the structure it is moored against. Fender whips serve as the lines or ropes that connect the fenders to the boat.
Where do you attach fenders on a boat?
Fender can be secured to the following locations on a boat:
- Cleats: Cleats are commonly used to secure fender lines. Fender whips can be tied to the cleats on the boat, providing a sturdy attachment point.
- Railings or stanchions: Many boats have railings or stanchions along the sides, which can be used to attach fenders. Fender whips are looped around the railings or stanchions and then secured.
- Lifelines: Lifelines, which are usually found on sailboats, can also be used to secure fenders. Fender whips are looped around the lifelines and then tightened to hold the fenders in position.
- Cleats on the dock: In some cases, fenders are attached to cleats on the dock rather than the boat itself. Fender whips are secured to the dock cleats, and the fenders are positioned accordingly to protect the boat.
Available accessories make fender attachment easier.
West Marine offers a variety of accessories to make it easier to secure fenders to your boat and quickly remove them when the boat is underway. Accessories include a variety of specialized fender cleats, rail clips, hangers and rail mounts by various manufacturers that make it easier to attach, position and remove fenders after your boat leaves the dock.
Proper positioning is important.
When attaching fenders, it's important to ensure they are positioned correctly to provide adequate protection. Fender whips should be securely fastened, with enough slack to allow for movement but not so loose that the fender loses its effectiveness. Additionally, it's essential to consider the boat's size, weight, and the docking conditions to determine the appropriate number and placement of fenders.
