Which would you rather wear: this tank top or plastic bottles and fabric scraps?
That's a trick question because they're one and the same.
Yes, you read that correctly. Patagonia's Flying Fish Responsibili-Tee Tank Top is 100% recycled (made from 4.8 plastic bottles and .26 pounds of fabric scraps to be exact). That saves 63 gallons of water to make compared to a conventional cotton tank top. But that's not where the responsible manufacturing ends. The original artwork on the left chest by Canadian artist Geoff McFetridge depicting a flying fish holding Poseidon's fork is screen-printed using inks that are PVC- and phthalate-free. Did we also mention the fabric is certified as bluesign® approved and sewn at a Fair Trade Certified™ factory? (More on that below.) 5.6-oz 50% recycled cotton/50% post-consumer recycled polyester. Imported.
The Design
The tank top silhouette and low-profile seams at the arms and neck provide for the kind of chafe-free comfort and freedom of movement you need for paddling your SUP or kayak across the bay, rock climbing outside or at the gym or a competitive game of volleyball at the beach.
The Fabric
The Flying Fish Responsibili-Tee Tank Top is made from a comfortable 50/50 blend of recycled cotton and post-consumer recycled polyester fabric that reduces our need for petroleum to make raw materials and cuts landfill and incinerator waste.
bluesign® Approved
bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers and safe for the end customers. Fabric that is certified as bluesign approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in its manufacture that conserves resources and minimizes impacts on people and the environment.
Fair Trade Certified™ Sewing
What makes a factory Fair Trade Certified? Rigorous standards for health and safety, respect for the environment, no child or forced labor, maternity and paid leave, community empowerment and additional money back to workers. Patagonia pays a premium for every Fair Trade Certified item that carries their label. That extra money goes directly back to the factory workers, and they decide how to spend it. They can allocate it as a cash bonus, use it for a collective social investment or both.
