For wet-stored boats, antifouling paints (aka bottom paints) are required to keep their hulls free of marine growth. To meet this need, West Marine offers a wide selection of bottom paints, including paints by Sea Hawk, who manufacturers a complete selection of bottom paints to meet the preferences and needs of every boat owner. Along with a focus on Sea Hawk bottom paints, this discussion also touches on other Sea Hawk products, including their solvents, reducers, underwater primers, and epoxy barrier coatings.
Types of Sea Hawk Antifouling Paints
Sea Hawk bottom paints include the latest in bottom paint technology. Along with traditional copper-based hard epoxy and ablative formulations, choices also include copper-free and low VOC, water based bottom paints that leave a softer environmental footprint and that meet various government regulations.
Sea Hawk Ablative Antifouling Paints
Sea Hawk's ablative bottom paints are designed to wear away due to water friction as boats are used. As the paint wears away, they release their biocide at a controlled rate. One advantage of ablative bottom paints is that unlike hard epoxy bottom paints, they require little or no sanding at haulout — which makes reapplication of the bottom paint much easier. Examples of Sea Hawk ablative antifouling paints include their AF 33, Cukote, Biocop, Monterey and Smart Solution Paints.
Sea Hawk Hard Epoxy-Based Antifouling Paints
While Sea Hawk's line of ablative paints, which wear away at a controlled rate, minimize sanding at haulout, many boaters prefer traditional epoxy based antifouling paint which often are heavily loaded with copper biocide. This can make them an excellent choice for warm, tropical waters where fouling is heavy. The tradeoff here is that much more sanding is needed when the time comes to repaint. Examples of Sea Hawk hard epoxy antifouling paints include their Tropikote Hard Antifouling Paint which, because it is 75 percent cuprous oxide, packs a powerful antifouling punch.
Sea Hawk Thinners and Solvents
Designed for use with Sea Hawk antifouling paints, Sea Hawk's thinners and solvents are used to optimize paint performance, enhance ease of application, and for general cleanup purposes. Examples include Sea Hawk Xylene Premium Quality Thinner, which can be used for thinning most enamels and epoxy resins. Sea Hawk products also include their S-80 Was 'n' Grease Killer, which is great for removing mold release wax from gelcoat and for general cleaning of tools.
Sea Hawk Primers and Epoxy Coatings
Sea Hawk products also include primers and epoxy coatings that are used to promote adhesion, seal out water and protect against corrosion.
Whether you keep your boat in high-fouling southern or low-fouling northern waters, Sea Hawk offers bottom paints to meet the needs and preferences of most every boat owner. Quality Sea Hawk primers, epoxies, solvents and paint removers help you to get the job done.
