World Oceans Day
This "Earth Day for the oceans" was started on June 8, 2003, with the goal of expanding public awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans and other large bodies of water.
Not only does the ocean generate most of the oxygen we breathe, help feed us, regulate our climate, clean the water we drink and offer a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines and other resources, it's our home for boating, sailing, fishing, paddling, surfing and so much more. It also provides limitless, priceless inspiration.
Celebrate World Oceans Day with Us!
West Marine’s BlueFuture in partnership with Mystic Aquarium is pleased to host World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 10 am – 2 pm at Mystic Aquarium in beautiful Mystic, Connecticut. This conservation-oriented event celebrates and honors the bodies of water that link us all.
Patrons can participate in events throughout the campus, including scavenger hunts, crafts, Nature Play on the Sea School Green, photo ops at the Selfie for the Seas stations, and hands-on activities; learn about marine debris, sustainable seafood and remarkable ocean facts. Visiting environmental and non-profit organizations will also be on hand to teach guests more about the world’s incredible oceans.
West Marine’s BlueFuture Kids Zone activity tent will be on site. Guests are encouraged to stop by for giveaways, knot tying, coloring and puzzle activities and to learn about the BlueFuture program and how it’s helping more kids get out on and around the water. In conjunction with the celebration, a special World Oceans Day pieceless puzzle will be available for purchase in the aquarium’s gift shop. All proceeds from puzzle sales will benefit the company’s nonprofit BlueFuture initiative.
Starting June 5:
BlueFuture’s World Oceans Day Puzzles Are Here!
Our BlueFuture "pieceless" puzzles — featuring the winning pieces of artwork from our World Oceans Day Art Contest — will be available for purchase in select West Marine Flagship and Waterlife stores, as well as in the world-acclaimed Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT. On June 5-11, 2017, 100 percent of the proceeds from puzzle sales will benefit West Marine’s nonprofit BlueFuture Fund, which helps community-based nonprofit organizations across the country provide young people with access to the water.
World Oceans Day is a major annual fundraiser for West Marine. It’s critical for growing the BlueFuture Fund, reaching more nonprofit groups and, ultimately, making a meaningful difference in the lives of even more children.

OUR 2017 WINNERS
West Marine has announced the two winners of its second annual World Oceans Day Art Contest: 12-year-old Alexandra R., a seventh-grader from South Windsor, CT; and 10-year-old Owen G., a fourth-grader from Cream Ridge, NJ.
For this contest, the company invited young people to submit original artwork inspired by the 2017 World Oceans Day theme—Our Oceans, Our Future. A panel of West Marine judges selected the winning artwork based on originality, interpretation of the theme and age-appropriate technical skills.
Both pieces of winning artwork will appear on innovative "pieceless" puzzles, which will be available for $10 a piece in select West Marine stores and at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT, starting Monday, June 5.
Each winner of the World Oceans Day Art Contest also is receiving a $250 West Marine gift card as an additional thank you.
