cheap plastic junk

Pros

Cons

  • Flimsy Construction

Best Uses

Comments about Tiller Tamer:

Very flimsy plastic. Rips through line (replace often). Slips under anything more than light load. Eventually broke and had to be disposed of. This is probably an adequate product for a sailing dinghy and maybe very light use on a small sailboat.

Comments about Tiller Tamer:

I installed this on a relatively small boat (Venture 17) so I could raise the main but it doesn't hold the helm confidently enough to leave it. OK in light winds, calm seas and holding the tiller straight while motoring.

    Comments about Tiller Tamer:

The Tiller Tamer is a great product that works perfectly as an auto-pilot with the right boat. Its ideal on my Cascade 23 and makes sailing much more pleasant in all conditions. We leave it on at all times when sailing to alleviate constant attention to the tiller. Great for solo sails when you need the boat to track while you work the sails and sheets.

However, there are a couple areas that make this product the' Tiller Lamer'! First, the line is terrible. It gets wet occasionally and sees a lot of sunshine, so it shrinks a lot over time. We tried resetting the line and get it wet to loosen it up, but it still shrinks. This is turn puts a lot of pressure on the plastic parts that the line runs through. Even when set looser the plastic will not hold up to a season of use. We have broken two TT bodies and now the line snapped too.

If this item was made with stainless steel and used a slightly dynamic cord....it would be PERFECT! It just will not hold up to normal wear and tear in the current materials.

        Comments about Tiller Tamer:

The plastic material used for the housing is not up to the job. This application requires a stainless steel housing. It might cost more -- but you have to buy a new plastic one about every year.

          Comments about Tiller Tamer:

I have purchased this unit a few times now. It works wonderfully when I'm sailing single handed as it allows me to move around the boat. It is an inexpensive auto pilot that is so simple it will never fail or drain your batteries. The only down part is the black plastic housing. The housing breaks easily and sometimes the line gets jammed between the pulley and housing (but it is easy to release). I wish it came in stainless steel as it would last a life time. I couldn't imagine sailing single handed without one.

          Comments about Tiller Tamer:

I have a 21 foot boat, but this is really made for a larger boat. The size of the unit that gets mounted on the is rather large, so it does not sit well and is always catching lines. Under way it is strange to adjust. I would rather just have on and off, vs the knob that needs to be cranked down on.
