Fighting Belts
Prepare to fish “stand up” with fighting belts from West Marine.
Back in the days of Ernest Hemingway and IGFA hall of famer Tommy Gifford, standard practice called for the use of a fighting chair when battling large pelagic fish such as marlin and sailfish. This made sense at the time, as along with battling powerful fish, anglers had to accommodate the extremely heavy tackle of the day. However, owing to the comparatively lightweight tackle now used, anglers are saving the fighting chair for all but the biggest of fish and are going “all in” with the stand up technique.
Recognizing the trend toward stand up, West Marine has expanded its selection of fighting belts which are referred to by some as “fishing belts” or “rod belts”. Brands represented include Play Action, Braid, AFTCO and Calcutta. Entry level models include fighting belts for use with rod and reel set ups in the 12 pound line class. Of course, West Marine offers fighting belts designed for much heavier action, including models for use with tackle in the over 80 pound line class. West Marine also offers fighting belt harnesses for use with AFTCO and Braid fighting belts. When completing your fighting belt/harness set up, be sure to pick up a set of fighting belt drop straps.
