I've had the radio for about a year for use on my skiff and I noticed that the battery terminals had started to corrode so I carefully cleaned off the corrosion. Next time I put it in the charger, it wouldn't charge and I found that one of the terminals had come off. I'm not sure if this was a result of the corrosion or the very stiff springs that hold the radio in the charger (as other mentioned).

I wasn't too worried because I'd bought the West Marine extended warranty. When I took it back I was told that the clerk hadn't registered the warranty for the radio. Fortunately, West Marine honored the warranty anyway.

I noticed the terminals on the new radio are starting to corrode like the first so I cleaned them (very carefully) and covered them with some electrical tape.

We'll see how this one lasts.

Other than that, the radio works fine though I'd prefer twist knobs for volume and squelch (minor issue).

I have had to buy a new battery every year for this radio. The battery seems to fail every time just after the 1 year warranty is up. Didn't get any help from ICOM, apart from offering to repair it, if I pay the costs. Will now be looking for a new VHF, won't buy ICOM again.

Comments about M36 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

I sue this for kayaking on Lake Tahoe primarily. It is a really good piece of equipment and provides wm with great peace of mind. Knowing I can reach out and get the Coast Guard or other boaters if I need them is a comfortable place to be!

It floats! It also has a high volume enhancing button if the wind is up or you need it to hear. Both great for kayaking! It fits comfortably in my PFD in the radio pocket for quick, easy access.

This radio has so many features - way more than I will likely use, but it is nice to know they are there.

The weather channel, which most UHFs have is great up at the Lake where wonds can come up in the twinkling of an eye.

Did I mention it floats and is water proof!

      Service and delivery comments:

I couldn't believe the shipping for this item. I ordered in on a Tuesday afternoon - it arrived the next day. Free shipping! I mean how can you do anything but wonder how they do it!

I have had excellent service from WM in just about every way. And this was just unbelieveable!

Comments about M36 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

Just put the ICOM M36 in service as a backup to installed VHF on Duffy 31. Chose M36 because of good experience w ICOM, user reports of clear audio, 6 watt output, waterproof specs.
I am very pleased with the clearly modulated audio and the volume boost feature which makes it audible over a diesel at cruise.
Controls are mostly intuitive; little experience yet with range, but 6 watt transmitt signal and clear audio should make the most of the compact antenna, plus the unit can be attached to a spare fixed VHF antenna.

Comments about M36 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

I bought this unit because I was tired of dealing with limited range VHF radios and even more tired of the poor reception when I did get a decent signal. This unit solved both problems extremely well. THe clarity is excellent. We were sailing in heavy weather last summer and picked up a securite' call long before nearby boats (the call came from a distant tugboat hauling a barge 3/4 nm behind) -- this gave us a plenty of extra time to take evasive action. Best safety purchase ever.

Comments about M36 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

Regarding comments about how tightly the unit fits in the charging station, that is a good thing to assure close contact between terminals. A bit of LPS 1 or dielectric (silicone) grease helps removal as well as protects against corrosion. Don't change it!
