Comments about Lowrance HDS-5 Gen2 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter with 50/200kHz Transducer:

This product cannot stand up to the demands of marine use. Both the original unit and replacement unit went out in less than a year. The replacement warranty is 90 days so Lorance would not fix or replace the unit after 11 months of use.

        Lacking Installation Hardware

Comments about Lowrance HDS-5 Gen2 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter with 50/200kHz Transducer:

It would have really helped if this unit included necessary installation hardware. There were no mounting screws for the transducer or mounting bracket for the head. After boring a 1" hole in the transom you would expect to have a grommet or clam shell vent to help seal this hole; not just caulk. It is the most common install. A couple of cable clamps for the transom would also be expected.

            Service and delivery comments:

West Marine Adviser said it did not come with a snap on cover, but it did. Lowrance service said install hardware to varied to include. This is unacceptable for the most typical install.

                  Best Uses

Comments about Lowrance HDS-5 Gen2 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter with 50/200kHz Transducer:

If unit performed reliably it would be great. Before and after software updates the unit reboots sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row. After the update random reboots aren't as frequent but weather updates lock the unit up with the alarm buzzer engaged. You have to kill power to restart. Given the 6-8 hours in planning and installing components it's too risky. I also purchased the Sirius weather/music receiver. Paying for the marine weather service on a sketchy chartplotter package is adding insult to injury. The rebooting/locking up appears to be fairly common.
