NICRO VENTILATION
Day/Night Plus Solar Vents

Solar-powered ventilation 24/7

The improved design of Day/Night Plus Vents moves up to 1000 cubic feet per hour, freshening your cabin 24/7 by running on solar power during the day, while charging a small battery to run at night. The constant flow of air produced by these vents helps to keep boat interiors dry which extends the life of upholstery, electronics and metal components. Vents easily retrofit to existing 3" or 4" Nicro vent cutouts. Direct-to-deck mounting affords greater security and protection against theft. Each includes an insect screen, below-decks shut off damper and internal on/off switch. Two blades (exhaust and intake) are provided with each vent. Install a pair of these to create efficient cross ventilation.

  • Type: Solar/battery-powered vent
  • Material: Stainless steel or plastic
  • Draw: No external power (NiMH battery/solar cell)
  • Warranty: Two years

I used two of these on an outdoor bomb shelter remodel. They went on the 2 outside stand up metal ventilation pipes and needed no fitting for the 3" size pipe. They did need a larger battery though. They come with a standard C-size nimh type rechargeable battery which is about 2,800 mah. I bought some 6,000 mah nimh and used those and it seems to last through the 3-4 cloudy days of no sun we see in south Louisiana each week. For the price it should come with the strongest and best rechargeable battery available, not a middle of the road battery. It does not move a whole lot of air, but it does seem to keep fresh air in the 150 sq ft underground space. These replace an earlier solar vent model from Nicro that lasted me for over 15 years and still worked, though not as well as the newer ones (larger solar panel on the newer ones as well as batteries to run them 24 hours a day).
Oh yes, and be VERY careful changing the battery -the solar cell is held on by only 2 small wires which will pull loose and need to be re-soldered if you let the solar panel hang loose or fall after it is unscrewed (like I did). There really should be a strong safety cord to prevent this from happening as the batteries will probably need to be changed every 2-3 years since they do wear out over time.
The instructions were detailed, in english, and all correct and easy to follow.
All in all a good product, though quite costly, but price was in line with similar solar vents.
I got the stainless steel ones and painted them - the steel is pretty thin and just covers plastic behind it. Product would be much better with a much thicker, all stainless steel shroud.

I have an old boat with a couple of vents of the previous design, that are still going over a decade of use with only battery changes. But of the 3 new design vents I bought, I swapped one out once, and another out twice, as they were failing within a couple to a few months. The 3rd one worked fine and is still working after a few years.

But one of the swap-outs is now failing. Failure begins with the motor becoming increasingly noisy, running speed slows, then is intermittent, running less and less. That's 6 fans I went through, 3 of which failed within months, and a 4th now failing after 3 yrs.

The old version fans... still going strong. And having taken both old and new vents apart it is clear that the new designs are nowhere near as rugged as the old ones. Motors cheaper, wiring more fragile, plastic is thinner. They should cost a whole lot less than they do.

Given the allowable return time time, shorter than it used to be, I am reluctant to recommend them.

I replaced one that had worn out. It had an installation date of May 1997. 19 years is a long time to run 24/7.

Mediocre quality, but thats not my main gripe

    By Frank

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I installed one of the 3 inch ventilator fans on my sailboat some years ago. The fan lasted about three years before it failed. I replaced it, and the replacement lasted about the same amount of time. Quality is not very good. But my main problem with this unit is that you can't just replace the motor; you either have to kind of jury rig something on your own, or buy a whole new unit. Replacement motors or assemblies are not available, and no steps have been taken in the design of the unit to help you change out the motor or just part of the thing.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

Previous versions of this solar fan were both solar and house bank powered, but the current version is only solar powered with a rechargeable battery that does not last until midnight. I liked the ability to have continuous (7/24) ventilation regardless of available sunlight, especially good for ventilating the boat on overcast days which are often rainy and/or humid days.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I installed one to provide constant ventilation of my small trawler cabin and galley. Works great, is virtually silent, and looks attractive with the stainless cover and teak interior trim. Not difficult to install. Unfortunately, they only last about 5-6 yr; and then they suddenly don't. Haven't found any better alternative, and installing a replacement couldn't be easier.

I have two of these on my boat. They do a good job of circulating air. I purchased the 2 year W.M. insurance and they both failed before the insurance policy expired. One would no longer charge the battery and the other developed noise in the motor. They were readily replaced by W.M.
