NICRO VENTILATION Day/Night Plus Solar Vents

Solar-powered ventilation 24/7

The improved design of Day/Night Plus Vents moves up to 1000 cubic feet per hour, freshening your cabin 24/7 by running on solar power during the day, while charging a small battery to run at night. The constant flow of air produced by these vents helps to keep boat interiors dry which extends the life of upholstery, electronics and metal components. Vents easily retrofit to existing 3" or 4" Nicro vent cutouts. Direct-to-deck mounting affords greater security and protection against theft. Each includes an insect screen, below-decks shut off damper and internal on/off switch. Two blades (exhaust and intake) are provided with each vent. Install a pair of these to create efficient cross ventilation.

  • Type: Solar/battery-powered vent
  • Material: Stainless steel or plastic
  • Draw: No external power (NiMH battery/solar cell)

I used two of these on an outdoor bomb shelter remodel. They went on the 2 outside stand up metal ventilation pipes and needed no fitting for the 3" size pipe. They did need a larger battery though. They come with a standard C-size nimh type rechargeable battery which is about 2,800 mah. I bought some 6,000 mah nimh and used those and it seems to last through the 3-4 cloudy days of no sun we see in south Louisiana each week. For the price it should come with the strongest and best rechargeable battery available, not a middle of the road battery. It does not move a whole lot of air, but it does seem to keep fresh air in the 150 sq ft underground space. These replace an earlier solar vent model from Nicro that lasted me for over 15 years and still worked, though not as well as the newer ones (larger solar panel on the newer ones as well as batteries to run them 24 hours a day).
Oh yes, and be VERY careful changing the battery -the solar cell is held on by only 2 small wires which will pull loose and need to be re-soldered if you let the solar panel hang loose or fall after it is unscrewed (like I did). There really should be a strong safety cord to prevent this from happening as the batteries will probably need to be changed every 2-3 years since they do wear out over time.
The instructions were detailed, in english, and all correct and easy to follow.
All in all a good product, though quite costly, but price was in line with similar solar vents.
I got the stainless steel ones and painted them - the steel is pretty thin and just covers plastic behind it. Product would be much better with a much thicker, all stainless steel shroud.

I have an old boat with a couple of vents of the previous design, that are still going over a decade of use with only battery changes. But of the 3 new design vents I bought, I swapped one out once, and another out twice, as they were failing within a couple to a few months. The 3rd one worked fine and is still working after a few years.

But one of the swap-outs is now failing. Failure begins with the motor becoming increasingly noisy, running speed slows, then is intermittent, running less and less. That's 6 fans I went through, 3 of which failed within months, and a 4th now failing after 3 yrs.

The old version fans... still going strong. And having taken both old and new vents apart it is clear that the new designs are nowhere near as rugged as the old ones. Motors cheaper, wiring more fragile, plastic is thinner. They should cost a whole lot less than they do.

Given the allowable return time time, shorter than it used to be, I am reluctant to recommend them.

Comments about Nicro Ventilation Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

This is a nice looking unit, and it was easy to install on my Catalina sailboat located on a mild southern lake. Worked about six months before it quit. It's a $185 peice of junk now. Should last much, much longer.

I see some buyers have had these solar vents fail right after the warrenty runs out if they bought with a credit card check your card benifits to see if you have extended warrenty which will give them an extra year.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I bought a Nicro 3" stainless vent to hopefully minimize mildew in my vintage Airstream trailer. The vent worked well, chugging away while the trailer was stored and most of the time when we were using it and the interior remained fresh, although occasionally I'd switch it off because the sound could become annoying. I guess I'm lucky, my vent lasted a little over four years, but for that price I still expected it to last longer or to be repairable. One other issue that for me was relatively minor: the interior flange cracked perhaps a year after it was installed- not a big deal, there were other things to address on a vintage vehicle, but I was a little surprised. I was pleased that it managed not to leak, even in gusty storms. I'd probably buy it again, fingers crossed, but I'm saying I'd not recommend it, based on all the other reviews of newer items that have not lasted well.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I like that the Manufacturer has replied, however, almost every single complaint into this product mentions dead motor or stops right after the warranty, which is only 2 years. You would think that a quality company would offer a longer warranty. Especially for something of this price. Either that, or do some research and development to find the cause of so many failures. Just seems obvious. Eventually, no one will buy these anymore because of all the negative reviews and complaints that do not get addressed.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

This is my second nicro fan. I keep my 24 ft. Hunter on a Lake in North Florida, and mildew is a big problem because of the humidity. After installing the solar fan, I got enough air flow to keep the mildew in check. Only draw back, the motor seems to give out after 2 years.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I bought this to replace a non-working vent on a hatch. The installation is easy enough, and it looks good. First issue is that the accesories listed to make the installation complete are not available. I needed a trim piece to make up the depth. Nicro didn't respond to my requests for sources or help. The deal breaker is the noise. After just 4 days the fan blade started rattling like crazy. Nothing I did can fix this. If I place the other blade (for intake) it stops, so it is the blade. For an expensive vent this isn't acceptable, would not buy another Nicro fan ever.

Comments about Day/Night Plus Solar Vents:

I have been using different models of the Nicro fans for many years, and they have worked very well. However, with this perticular model (4" White Plastic Vent, 1000 cu.ft./hour, 4-3/4" Cutout Size ), it isn't the same story.
I bought a couple to use in my new trailer a few years ago. They stopped working after a year, so I bought a couple more to replace them, thinking they must have been defective. Now less than two years later, they have both stopped working again. Changed the batteries, which didn't help. Measured the Solar voltage output, and the switch, both seemed ok. Checked the motors and they seem to be dead. Not sure what to do about them. It is pretty expensive to have to keep replacing them every year or two.
