Product Description

Better than a pipe wrench

If you are not equipped with wrenches that fit the nuts on your stuffing box, we suggest you purchase TWO of these. Why? Because you will need two to make an adjustment: One for the locking nut and one for the adjusting nut. These wrenches tend to be easier to use than pipe wrenches especially in tight engine spaces where many boaters must work.

  • Primary Usage: Adjust/remove inboard shaft packing nut
  • Material: Cast chrome plated steel
  • Size: 1" to 3" adjustable
  • Warranty: Limited Lifetime

Comments about Adjustable Packing Nut Wrench:

The slider jaw cracked on the first application of pressure to turn a stubborn locknut on my sailboat's stuffing gland. Luckly I could get a big channelock pliers into the space and hold the gland with a pipe wrench. This would be a useful tool if better made.

Comments about Adjustable Packing Nut Wrench:

I purchased this tool last weekend to adjust the lock nut on my boat's shaft packing gland. It's very difficult to find cresent-style wrenches that open to 2". A pipewrench can be made to work, but the jaws are too wide for the space and chew up the soft brass nut. A traditional "spud" or lock nut wrench is made for this purpose.

Unfortunately, the design of this wrench is very poor. The jaws slide back and forth on a slot that is so sloppy that you can't lock the jaws effectively. As soon as you apply pressure, it slips and the jaws are no longer parallel.

Thank goodness for West Marine's no hassle return policy.

Comments about Adjustable Packing Nut Wrench:

The idea is great. After using this tool I had to go back to larger crescent wrenches. The biggest problems were: it's too light for packing nuts bigger than 1", it doesn't lock in place and is constantly slipping. The "hook" would be great if the wrench didn't constantly slip open or close.

Comments about Adjustable Packing Nut Wrench:

I bought this based on the on-line recommendation and the claim that it was "better than a pipe wrench". I bought 2 of these. After struggling for hours to get a fit around the packing nut and locking nut, I went to the local hardware store and bought 2 pipe wrenches. In less than a minute I had the stuffing box nut loosen. The [*] design is that it is constructed from case metal and uses a wing nut to tighten. The adjusting screw is sloppy so getting a good fit around the nut is hit or miss.
