Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

After replacing rg213 cable and connectors, I replaced my old masthead antenna with this one. The SWR went down instantly from 3 to 1,4 or almost the same ratio I obtained with the dummy load.
The forward watts (output) increased from 16 to 29 watts and the reflected power went down from 4 to 0.5 watts. This antenna is installed on top of a 64 feet sailboat mast and use with an ICOM IC-M422 vhf radio.
I am now confident that this equipment will provide a reliable transmission during our current trip to the Caribbean.

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

I've gone through 3 of these antennas in the past 6 months due to the whip antenna falling-off during use (the WestMarine store was good about replacing the third one under warranty). I have it mounted on a recreational hovercraft so maybe it is the vibration causing the problem but there is no way to "lock" the whip on. At least for me it is easy to get to the mount.... would be a drag on top of a 50 foot mast to have this recurring problem.

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

Replaced a 15 year old Metz (which was getting erratic) with this. It gives clear transmission but over very short range. The Metz would reach out well over 6 miles (sometimes around 20) This thing gives me about a mile or two. I have checked the radio and antenna wiring performance and they are excellent, so it has to be this whip, moutned at the 45 ft masthead.

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

Bought an old, old sailboat that has one of these mounted on it for years. Took it into the EMC Lab where I worked and "swept" it with an analyser. One of the best freq response on an antenna I've seen. Oldie, but a goodie!

              Waterlogged

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

Failed within half its warranted life, i.e. 2.5 years of the 5 year warranty. When finally replaced on top of our 61' mast we found the base filled with water. Not something you would expect of a sailboat antenna. Unfortunately it's been replaced with the exact same antenna that another cruiser here in Grenada had on board their boat new. So we'll see what happens.

              Severe Corrosion

              By Liahona

Comments about Shakespeare Mariner 4200 3' 3dB VHF Sailboat Antenna:

I purchased this for use on my new 53 foot sailboat. The electronics installer said it had poor standing wave/reflected wave characteristics and would not warrant it or the installation. The mast of the antenna is stainless steel but the base canister is made of mild steel and severely corroded (completely corroded through) within 5 years. I would not recommend this item.
