The only way to truly appreciate Cetol is to have experience with the tedium of varnish.

Varnish looks great, and will always be the gold standard, but Cetol is a reasonable substitute that looks quite good, and it's ease of application and maintenance make up for any possible shortcomings.

I am NOT a fan of the "Marine Light" version. I understand the look they're going for, but once you've seen it, it looks artificial and orange.

The regular "Marine" version I might be tempted to use on a toe rail, however it is not "translucent" as advertised and obscures the grain, but does have a pleasant dark brown color.

Now..."Natural Marine Teak" is remarkable. It allows the the grain to show, appearing genuinely translucent, and is a beautiful golden-brown substitute for the nightmares of varnish on both teak and mahogany. It looks - well - natural, with no hint of artificial color tint.

I recommend following the instructions precisely. Do not thin, and apply THIN coats, just enough to be sure the wood is wet. Dab some on, stretch it out with the grain, and don't let it pool or drip. When you can hear your brush, tip it off, and get more Cetol.

Three coats in three days, and your brightwork will look dynamite, especially for the minimum time and effort as opposed to traditional varnish.

If you're torn on which color to use like I was, after using all of them, I recommend only the "Natural Teak" variant.

One down side is that I've noticed tiny bubbles between coats. Sanding would solve that, but since it's not recommended by Interlux, and puts me back to might-as-well-just-use-varnish, I wait about a hour until the coat is still tacky, and go over it with a wet edge. Bubble problem solved.

If you have the time and mindset for varnish, you should probably stick with it. If you want an excellent product that mimics varnish without the fuss, three coats of Natural Marine Teak followed with two coats of Gloss will make you extremely happy.

I had used this product since about 1998, when it was recommended. I had very good luck with it, and have been very satisfied all these years. The last two cans were different - would not level the same, and took over a week to cure even in perfect shop conditions. I have a friend who has experienced the same trouble. Contacted Interlux with the batch numbers, but no help there - I returned the last can to West Marine. As much as I have enjoyed using this product in the past, I no longer can expect it to perform well for me, and have moved to other products.

Comments about Cetol Marine Wood Finish:

I have used Cetol Natural and Cetol Gloss for years on my Island Packet with great results. It lasts for over 1 year between refresh coats. Now, I am putting a couple of coats of Sikkens Cetol Gloss over Captains Flagship Varnish. I have heard good things about this combination lasting a long time. I sanded existing varnish with 220 grit sand paper, cleaned off the dust, applied a coat of varnish, waited 24 hours for that to dry, sanded with 220, cleaned off dust, applied coat of Cetol Gloss, waited 24 hours, and applied another coat of Cetol Gloss. Sikkens says no sanding required between coats of Cetol Gloss. It looks great and I am not a professional at brightwork. There are some foam brush marks which I could probably have sanded out, but it looks really good. And with a foam brush even. If you do need to sand between coats of Cetol Gloss you might want to give it 2 days to dry. Cetol Gloss stays tacky longer than varnish. I am hopeful that this combination lasts at least one year. I have heard it will and so far it looks great and was easy to apply.
