The good Cetol: The "Natural Teak" version has a nice tint but still lets plenty of grain show. It's easy to apply, especially when thinned 10% with mineral spirits. Carefully apply three thin coats and you'll get good results. Five or six coats, sanding between a few of the coats, will take your results up another notch. Now the big secret: Allow to dry, gently sand smooth with 220-400 grit, and apply 2-3 coats of "Cetol Marine Gloss", similarly thinned. You'll get a dramatically more glossy finish.
Every year, sand smooth and apply 2 thinned coats of clear. With good weather, you'll finish both coats in about four hours.

The Bad Cetol: The standard "Cetol Marine" is a horrible color and is nearly opaque. The "Cetol Marine Light" version is every bit as bad. Stay away from these colors and stick with the "Natural Teak" version, which is so much better that it should be called Cetol V2.0. Also, unless you top-coat with "Cetol Marine Gloss" as described above, the finish will turn a rather dull "semi gloss" after just a few weeks. If you are looking for gloss, use the Clear. In fact, it works extremely well to protect your 15 coats of traditional varnish with two coats of Cetol clear, which is more flexible and longer lasting than standard varnish

I had used this product since about 1998, when it was recommended. I had very good luck with it, and have been very satisfied all these years. The last two cans were different - would not level the same, and took over a week to cure even in perfect shop conditions. I have a friend who has experienced the same trouble. Contacted Interlux with the batch numbers, but no help there - I returned the last can to West Marine. As much as I have enjoyed using this product in the past, I no longer can expect it to perform well for me, and have moved to other products.

The downtown Cleveland store on St. Clair has exceptional customer service. Every time I go into the store no matter who helps me the associates take time to understand what I’m looking for and will explain the produce if needed. I find them very knowledgeable and if they don’t have an answer they know where to look for it

It wasn't a problem covering the teak indoors. It took 48 hours for it to dry...tacky between coats. It may be a problem when I use it outdoors on my boat if the weather is damp.

Using this product for nearly 20 yrs. So far it is the best varnish for boat's exterior trim. Lasts nearly 2 yrs with three coats, then lightly sand and apply 2 more coats for another 2 yrs.
