Perfect Radio for communicating with race committee and other vessels for inland small sailboat racing_ 14'-22'. Although my only "Con" was no wrist strap or lanyard, there is a convenient hole on the belt clip to which one can attach an inexpensive lanyard/wrist strap, (which I did). It works perfectly. Great volume and clarity even on very windy days! Battery seems to hold charge forever. Switchable 1 or 5 watt for extended battery life. I use it mostly on 1 Watt setting for lake racing. It's still crystal clear and plenty loud for my use. Having also done plenty of W/L, "beer can" racing and distance ocean racing on big boats, I would imagine this radio to be equally effective on the 5 Watt setting. It's a "real" marine radio that is TRULY WATERPROOF AND FLOATS, made by a reputable marine radio manufacturer, at an unbelievable price point!

The users guide uses tiny symbols for the buttons on the transceiver. While the text in the guide is easy to read even with my 62 year old eyes I cannot read the text on the buttons in the guide even with my best reading glasses. This means I have to guess at which button to push based on the text I can read. In some cases this is impossible since you have to press two buttons for some operations. A work around is to download the users guide from their web site which I have done and then zoom 200% so I can read it. No-one should have to do this. Before I buy another SH transceiver I will inspect the guide first.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX150 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

I was looking to replace a still well working, Uniden handheld I had gotten about six or seven years ago. It's battery no longer maintained much of a charge, and after seeking out to replace the battery, found that Uniden no longer supports the model which was discontinued a few years ago and that they do no longer offer a replacement battery.

So, I since I needed a few other items for my current boat, I checked out the handheld marine VHF units that West is currently offering.

I chose this Standard Horizon unit over a comparable West Marine branded radio, both offered at the same sale price.

When I bought the Uniden, I bought it as both a back up for a large river going houseboat we owned and operated on the Ohio River. My lower station VHF was an older model and only would do a dual watch on Channels 16 and 9, but around Cincinnati, most VHF radio traffic is done on Channel 13. With that boat having been a 70 footer, along with the river tows, a few other private boats and the local tour river boats, I was one of the largest boats on the river and would keep in contact with the river tows and river boats quite often, especially when "running the Gauntlet" that is the area of downtown Cincinnati, with its tight twists, many bridges and some days, a very high traffic load.

I no longer own that boat and now do my boating down in the waters of Central Florida, most recently moving to the St. John's River, homeporting a mid-sized pontoon boat in Sanford. I use this radio as my primary VHF for communications and for keeping track of the weather via the local NOAA weather radio channels. I also will carry this radio with me when on long car trips and at home just to listen to the weather frequencies.

So far, this radio has already given some great service in several extended runs on the St. John's I have taken since I moved the boat to that waterway. I am able to successfully broadcast around four or five miles, which is pretty good for a hand held VHF.

Got this to carry on extended day-sails on my Hobie cat, for emergency and weather. Can use the very strong clip to the outside of my dry bag, readily accessible and waterproof for capsizes/spray. Good battery life. Good product for the price.
