I've owned 3 Standard hand held radios, and several fixed mount. They have always proven rugged, well made, easy to use, and reliable. This radio seems to have the same qualities. The range is limited, which is a con, but for all handhelds and not just this one. If you're planning going more than 3-5 miles from land, I'd suggest a fixed mount radio with 5x the power of this little handheld.

The only issue I have is it's a bit bulky. The battery and whatever sort of void there is within the radio for flotation make it feel quite big in my hands. I have big hands. That said, I use this radio on my 15' Boston Whaler that I use in Marine coastal areas with my daughter and neices. I am an USCG Unlimited Oceans Master.

I purchased this radio and even placed the order before it was available for sale. It has all the features I was looking for. I can charge it with my USB solar power charger. It floats! Not too big. All those things would be great, but there was no way to know that once it's wet, the speakers and microphone are USELESS. My kayak friends who we are all certified ACA Kayak/canoe instructors have VHF radios from the other "Iconic" manufacturer. The model they have it's water resistant and once it's wet, it's still clear and perfect to communicate. We got into an emergency off the coast of St.Agustine and I had a horrible time while on my kayak trying to communicate with the radio because it sounded like a drowning robot. The Coast Guard and my fellow lost kayakers advised my radio sounded very distorted. Regarding the design of this model, when I first purchased mine, the trap door to the USB charging port was easily bumped and remained open. I believe my first one was damaged due to this design. West Marine was superb at replacing it with another radio. If this radio never got wet and it's only purpose was to be used in dry environments, it would be a good product.

Not good for Kayaker

By Pat

from Florida

Comments about Standard Horizon HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

This radio has a few flaws for anyone who expects to get the radio wet. I purchased this radio before ocean kayaking for the weekend in the keys. The radio works fine until it gets wet, then the volume becomes really muffled to the point where you can hardly hear anything. Once the radio dried fully it returned to normal audio. Also, the battery doesn't appear to have a very good seal. Because after a few days I removed the battery from the back of the radio and found saltwater corrosion starting on the battery leads. I decided to return the radio and get a West Marine brand which seems to have a better seal. This radio would probably be fine for the majority of people but its not good for kayakers who cant help from getting there equipment wet.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

Bought the HX290, the case is big and bulky, not like my old Standard Horizon. Returned it and got the HX150, the keypad is the same, the screen is smaller. Works great and is eazy to hold, at 40 bucks less a much better deal.

Comments about Standard Horizon HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

Unfortunately, the first unit didn't work. I foolishly complied with the big red sticker on the box that states "STOP" and instructs the user before returning the item to call technical support for assistance - I did. After telling the tech rep that I was getting no reception and insisting I was on the weather channel he told me "I don't know what to tell you". Being surprised I blurted out "excuse me" , and he again repeated himself. After informing him he should find another job I hung up. Bottom line I returned the item to West Marine in Bonita Springs and the service was outstanding. After a couple of minutes trying to get the radio to work, with no success, the cheerfully exchanged the radio.
