Comments about HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

Unfortunately, the first unit didn't work. I foolishly complied with the big red sticker on the box that states "STOP" and instructs the user before returning the item to call technical support for assistance - I did. After telling the tech rep that I was getting no reception and insisting I was on the weather channel he told me "I don't know what to tell you". Being surprised I blurted out "excuse me" , and he again repeated himself. After informing him he should find another job I hung up. Bottom line I returned the item to West Marine in Bonita Springs and the service was outstanding. After a couple of minutes trying to get the radio to work, with no success, the cheerfully exchanged the radio.

Lighter because it is floating, but a bit larger and clunky due to large air pocket built in.

Comments about HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

I owned an HX290 (still do, although it doesn't work) for 18 months. It's worked maybe 6 of those. The problem: The CD-52 charging cradles, a cheap [*] piece of junk that they admit "we've had some problems." I've gone through 5 of them. They replace, send back, I'm without a radio for weeks at a time...and the new cradle lasts 2 months, tops. Now, they say the cradle is fine...must be the battery is shot. Again, radio is 18 months old and hasn't worked more than it's been in service. A waste of money. I'm shopping for a new radio now.

Comments about HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

This VHF radio is the most reliable, well featured for the dollar. I chose this radio because it has all the features I want including it floats.

I plan to purchase a matching radio in the next month or so.

Comments about HX290 Floating Handheld VHF Radio:

I have used this radio quite a bit now for tug and barge work. I was surprised to find I could transmit and receive all the way across LB/LA harbor. Well over the advertised 5 mi. The audio is crystal clear. I can hear my captain and he can hear me. Coupled with the speaker/mic, it's the perfect combo for pros or the weekender. I did however lose my antenna while working. Make sure yours is screwed on tight.

This is a perfect radio for day sailers and kayakers. Any small boat that will be on the water and is not capable of suppling power to a mounted radio.
