      Comments about Mooring Whips:

I live on a canal, and tie up my boat up to the dock from one side. I got the whips to keep the boat away from the dock. They work well for this. So well that I need to pull the boat back toward the dock with additional dockside mooring lines to facilitate ingress and egress.

I may have oversized the whips, and could have gotten by with a shorter version. I purchased 16' whips, and have a 13' wide boat. When tightly sprung the whips form an inverted U, and you lose about 3' of horizontal displacement. Thing is my outboard cleats that the whip lines attach to are only about 4-5' from the boats centerline. So the boat secured by the whiplines alone sits 5' away from the dock.

The unexpected advantage of the whips is that they allow me to easily singlehandedly dock the boat. I now steer the boat under the upwind whip, and then run up and grab the hanging loop and drop it over the boat's cleat. I then do the same with the downwind whip, and I am secure. I then attach the previously mentioned dockside mooring lines at my leisure.

The kit comes with stainless bolts and nuts included (these are not cheap). In order to use them you require access below the dock to put the nut on. I didn't have access for all the nuts, and ended up purchasing some 6" SS lags to secure the back of the base down. That worked well.

I am an Amazon Prime shopper, and found several (slightly cheaper) alternatives. I chose Taylormade because I wanted a product that would last. I bought from West Marine because I could order the item and look at it in the store before accepting it, and have a local rep if I had a problem. I went to the Seabrook store because the management is helpful and friendly, and I have always had good experiences there. I play with boats for fun, and don't want or need to deal with stressful situations.

      Service and delivery comments:

Timely. We opened it up in the store and made sure everything was there. Comes in a 9' box - bring your pickup. The clerk loaded it for me (Thanks!).

        Comments about Mooring Whips:

Installed this on my dock to protect my 26' sailboat from summertime boat wake. Works like a charm, no more rubbing against my dock every time a boat passes by or a strong wind kicks up. Easy to install, though it took a few tries to find the right attachment points on my boat that would keep the poles and ropes from rubbing against the boat rigging. The fiberglass poles are flexible enough to accomodate a wide variety of wind conditions.

        Comments about Mooring Whips:

The PMW1400 mooring whips are very well made and work well. Unfortunately, they do not come with "roller" tips as advertised. They come with fixed fairleads that create more friction making adustment more difficult. [...] The whips are still highly recommended but would be better with a redesigned roller.

        Comments about Mooring Whips:

Good product - 3 minor issues - 1) did not include nuts for lag bolts, 2) included wrong size nuts for cleats, 3) did not include breast lines as advertised, but not a big deal for use on a lake. Called West Marine and response was - not their problem, call the manufacturer. First time I have ever had an issue with West Marine product.
