Product Description

Perfect for daysailers up to 3,000 pounds, tenders, dinghies and duck boats, this motor sets a new standard for quiet, lightweight and ecologically-friendly propulsion.

With a built-in ultra-efficient, lithium-manganese battery pack, Torqeedo Travel outboards deliver power and range. (Range varies depending on speed, conditions and boat type. At full throttle, run time is 35 minutes; slower speeds result in up to ten hours or more!)

The Travel 1003 is completely waterproof, clean and easy to use with push-button starting and a four-function display that shows percentage of battery power remaining, speed over ground and remaining range. Speed and range are calculated using an integrated GPS receiver. An audible signal warns you when the battery charge drops to 30%. The smallest carbon footprint of any propulsion motor.

Impressive quality and engineering. I use it on a Watertender 9.9 and my expectations have been exceeded. Range and speed are very good. I replaced a 4hp four stroke and really like a gas/oil free 30lb motor. I ran it several hours, approx. 2-4 miles and got home with 50% battery remaining. I am planning on adding a solar panel to extend the range and recharge while at the sand bar. Considering it's weight at 29.5 lbs and range of 2-16 NM depending on speed, no oil changes, water pump impellers, thermostats, tune-ups, flushing, not having to start & warm-up, not having to reach back to shift F-N-R, only twisting the throttle. This is the perfect outboard for 2 - 4HP applications. I Love It !

Motor is fine Skeg a little flimsy , Friend damaged unit , when a diagnosed problem a stripped a small screw seat on underwater motor pod, a $30.00 ?, part. when i contacted torqeedo I had 2 options buy a new motor for 1,000.00 or take it to a service center where they could replace the part. The motor is not new and iI don't feel like spending 600.00 on shipping and service for a cheep part they they could sell me. Every car dealer sells parts to the public and not just their own repair center :-( sad , now ill have to put her back in water with 3 screws instead of 4 and pray.

Comments about Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I like the concept of the Torqeedo 1003. If the design was more rugged and reliable this would be a 5-star review. I have used the motor to push a small (15 FT) sailboat in and out of the harbors, and more recently as my Tender motor to get to shore & back to a larger boat from moorings. When it works, it does the job very well. Decent power (stronger than my old Honda 2HP), very quiet, and super easy to transport since it breaks down into 3 parts. HOWEVER, I have had a LOT of problems with mine: I've had it for about 5 years now. First, the tiller assembly is very flimsy and broke. I reinforced it using epoxy and some ABS plastic parts. I have had to send it in for repair 4 times because of different "Errors" that could not be handled over the phone. The Tiller assembly electronics had to be replaced completely. The transom mount assembly, also had to be replaced because the thread on the screws stripped (I do not use a lot of force to tighten these...). The motor assembly was also replaced once due to another Error I was getting very frequently. Finally, my present situation is I'm getting E30 and E06 constantly with the motor not responding at all, even when I try different batteries as I have two, which means I will have to send it in again. Unfortunately, the unreliability of the motor, and the fact that it can't be repaired locally (and quickly) is such that I will have to go back to gas. I'm bummed about it since I like the concept so much. My sense is that they added too much complexity in the design, so that came at a reliability hit.

Bottom line, it's a great idea that works great when it works. They still need to work a bunch of issues out to make this a reliable motor.

Comments about Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I use this on a 12' John boat in a small (22 acre)lake. Mostly with the kids who love to motor around - and pull their friends behind the boat in a tube. My youngest grandson is 13 -- he learned to use it quickly. Operation is simple. Recharging is substantially easier than the motors that run off a car battery. Its pricy - but worth it.

Comments about Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I purchased the Torqeedo 1003 since gas engines are not permitted on the local lakes and reservoirs. I have to tell you, I will not be using my old trolling motor again. This electric outboard is easy to use, can go as slow as my trolling motor or can perform as good as any 2.5 - 3hp gas outboard without the noise, smell or maintenance. West Marine in Annapolis, MD was very helpful with my purchase. The staff was knowledgable, quick and polite. All good since I wanted to get back home.

I used the Torqeedo 1003 for one season on my 20' 2500# sailboat. It worked perfectly, and I had no problems. I daysail, and motor 15-20 minutes from my slip to the harbor, go sailing and motor back to the slip. I always returned with 70-75% remaining battery power. I love that the motor is light weight, and there is almost no maintenance. No smelly gas, and no worries about ethanol. It easily pushes my boat 3.5 to 4 knots. If you daysail a smaller sailboat this outboard is perfect. It may not work out if you have to fight currents. Just bring the 10# battery home and charge it between uses. For convenience remove the tiller arm, lock the motor forward, and attach the available remote throttle. The remote throttle also has the GPS with info panel. I think they have worked all the

I use this on a dinghy for my sail boat in the Caribbean. I wanted to avoid gas on board. You have to keep it charged. It is good for a number of trips. It is not fast but acceptable. I have a 10 foot west marine ridged floor inflatable. It is light and easy to store. No oil or gas to leak.

Comments about Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

I bought this motor to use with the roll-up inflatable that I purchased from West Marine. I needed something to get me from my boat to the beach as I didn't want to bring my boat in water any shallower than 4-5 feet. What I love about this motor is that it can be stored on its side, there is no leakage of liquid, no grease and NO MAINTENANCE. You can charge the battery on your boat, at the marina, at home or even in your car (with a converter). The motor is lighter than most propane and gas motors. We put ours in a duffle bag with wheels. The motor breaks down for easy storage. The only downside I see, which doesn't apply to my use, is that if you run out of battery it takes a pretty long time to recharge the battery. I guess you can always buy a spare battery, but I think that avenue is pretty costly. I'd buy it again. I've used it one, it worked, no issues. I did read all of the instructions, which I recommend because the motor can and will give you error codes and you need the manual to see how to fix it (most of the time its because the connection isn't sitting properly).

My biggest objection is that it is slow to charge even from 12V. Batteries are too expensive and the unit isnt totally quiet.I used a trolling motor with GP27 gel batteries for several years and was sold on the electric concept. the Torqeedo has in my opinion and annoying whine during operation. I didn't get he range that I expected. Going back to a saltwater rated trolling motor. Can buy two for the same price!

The T-1003 flew off the transom when going over a wake. The fiberglass on the transom is ripped up, and I know it was torqued hard when mounted on my Gheenoe. The motor is in 15 feet of water, buried in black muck, so it is unrecoverable. I believe the clamps that hold the motor to the transom are defective. If you have one of these, only use in calm, protected harbors.

Comments about Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard, Short Shaft:

When you are tired or in ruff conditions you can remove battery first: Thus allowing you to move a motor that barely weighs 20 lbs. This also applies if you have small storage areas. Gasoline outboards are having enormous issues with current fuels making these motors, comparably, extremely reliable. My range with an 8' Avon (2 adults and 2 tots) is over 25 miles at 4 knots. Drops to about 16 at 5 knots. A canoe with a motor mount would easily go faster with a range over 30 miles. I was tempted to rate this motor a 5 but believe the new propane motors may prove to be better investment since it is easy to carry extra fuel in those 16 oz. bottles.
