I bought this kayak in June and by October I had logged 33 fishing trips. Tracks well, pretty stable in some big boat wakes and rough water. Fishing the bays of Long Island. I would eliminate the scupper holes under the seat they need to be sealed for a dryer ride. A nicely priced fishing kayak to get in the game.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great yak. But, as it doesn't come with a seat, the seating situation on this model needs to be addressed for people considering this purchase.

First, it requires a Wilderness seat back -- the same that comes on the Pescador. You might put any bottom seat in, but the seat back assembly (the whole assembly, not just the pad) is critical to any longer-than-two-hours of comfort. It, and the clip to hold it to the deck are somewhat available, but the seat back assembly is VERY hard to find (only one on-line seller has the "Tarpon Seat Back Assembly" and WM's policy about mentioning other sellers won't let me tell you who it is here, so you might have to search around for the "Tarpon Seat Back Assembly"), and it is, BTW, often out of stock.

Bottom line, maybe you should just buy the Pescador with seat to start with, and install whatever fishing goodies on it aferward. Rod holders, anchor trolley, etc., are easy to install and fairly inexpensive compared to good aftermarket seats you won't ever use again. Trust me.

Comments about Pompano 120 Sit On Top Angler Kayak, Sand:

Got this on a 2014 holiday sale. It's as advertised except my boat has two rod holders behind the seat, and did not include the Scotty mount. It has the rest of the advertised features. The rubber hatch covers fit tight, and there are liner bags for the two smaller hatches.

This is the same as the pre 2008 Tarpon, and also the Pescador. I worry the mold may be getting old, as my boat has a few concave areas on the bottom. I'll try to work on this in the warmer months. I did 'ship to store', and should have examined it more carefully upon receipt.

As mentioned in another review, I found the Tarpon seat online (at the auction site), and it's well worth the extra few bux. It becomes a rigid seat back, much better than the usual add on 'slingback' types. It's like the difference between one of those collapsing 'soccer mom' chairs and a solid wooden restaurant chair. It gives a much more secure seating position, allowing better bracing. I made a seat bottom from a piece of packing foam, and cut some circles from that to make scupper plugs. Some of those 'one way valve' plugs for the feet scuppers would be great, but the first one I tried didn't fit.

The boat paddles very well, tracks straight and is easy to make speed and distance. It takes a few knuckle whacks to get used to avoiding the handles on the side, but they are located perfectly for carrying the kayak like a suitcase.

    Makes my old kayak obsolete.

Comments about Pompano 120 Sit On Top Angler Kayak, Sand:

Not had chance to use it yet but confident it will be excellent. Main reason for review is to comment on the excellent service BUT inconsistent web page photos!

          Service and delivery comments:

Ordered online, delivered to local store exceptionally quickly. Staff at Hermitage were excellent, helpful and knowledgable (5 stars to them)!
Only one minor issue; the pictures on the webpage! 2 of them show a single flush mount on the stern and a central Scotty holder, the other one shows no Scotty and 1 flush mount. THe description says 2 flush mount and no mention of a Scotty. The model delivered to me was as described - 2 flush mounts, no Scotty. Not a problem because I had read it but some people might be basing expectations on the pics which are not consistent.

Comments about Pompano 120 Sit On Top Angler Kayak, Sand:

It's a great kayak, my only complaint would be the lack of the proper seat as already mentioned, and your feet will stay wet since the scuppers in the cockpit are below the waterline (I weigh 240 lbs for reference).

It paddles very well, tracks very well. It wonderful under every condition I have put it through from flatwater to ocean fishing and dealing with sharp highspeed wakes from the less than polite power boaters.

I bought this kayak after owning several different brands and models from 11' - 13'. The hull on the Pompano is versatile and has just the right amount of rocker, and will carry you on a variety of water conditions. If you are looking for a good all around kayak, this is it!

Comments about West Marine Pompano 120 Sit-on-top Angler Kayak, Yellow:

Best Yak for the price. You'll need to buy a seat for it. I fish Galveston Bay, the big open part 3 to 4 foot waves broadsided me and I was still fishing. It tracks well, fast for its length, stable. Not going to be able to stand up if there are waves.

This is my first kayak and it has made every time out an exceptional one. I have now been out more than 6 times and it is a very stable and comfortable kayak. I've done a 10 mile round trip without any complaints. I can side saddle comfortably and almost stand in it (I didn't want to try all the way because of all the gear I had with me). The seat I'm using is a Crack of dawn apex 1. I'm not sure if weight and body type matters, but I'm around 160 with an athletic build. For the price, nothing comes close. I did buy it on sale.

Lots to like with this kayak, but one major flaw. As this is basically a Wilderness Tarpon design, it is specially molded to accept a Wilderness seat -- which you cannot buy without buying the yak. There's an extra ledge or "step" at the back of the seat area that is not used with typical aftermarket seats, and this ledge digs into my lower-lower back despite a good COD seat. May be a way to fill that open area over the ledge with hard foam or something...guess I'll have to try, because the proper seat is not available. The more expensive Pescador at WM is the same yak without the rod holders, but it comes with a seat that "may" be comfortable (but it's not the nice Phase 3 seat on the Wilderness models).
