We have 3 units now; 2 of which are going on 3 years old. We use 2 of the units to heat the salon during the winter in lieu of the onboard HVAC and the new unit supports heating of the enclosed cockpit to limit the accumulation of ice, snow and condensation. We have NEVER had a problem with any of these units. Plug them in; set the desired heat and fan; done! They are analog, so if power goes out on the dock, when it comes back on you are back in business. No digital resets required. A simple great product.

This (rebranded Caframo) is old heating technology, moving air over hot wires. Nothing special like advanced ceramics or anything. The design has not changed in at least a decade and a half so it is surprising how much the price keeps increasing each year.

Major features are:
1) it is flat and broad, so won't tip over if your boat rocks or you accidentally trip over it.
2) it has a variety of power settings, more than just low/high, including a setting to turn on just above freezing.

      Comments about Portable Cabin Heater:

Put in on freeze setting for short GA winter frost period. Thermostat malfunctioned heater was on constantly for 4 weeks. Marina electric bill went from $15.00 a month when it first was working to $115.00 the month it malfunctioned.Lucky it didn't burn up my boat.

      Comments about Portable Cabin Heater:

I use 3 units for my American Tug 41. 1 unit is on "defrost" mode all winter (Pacific Northwest). Regularly used in colder summer nights when cruising northern BC. All units working just fine. 5 years and counting. Gets hot up against the unit! Use care when positioning. Allow good air flow.

        Comments about Portable Cabin Heater:

Like ANY 1500 watt heater, there are limitations, but this does a great job in appropriately sized areas. Runs well, is quiet, and does the job. We have three of these and all have worked well with no problems. Most of the time I run it at a medium power level (the high just gets a smaller room too warm!).

        Comments about Portable Cabin Heater:

I had this heater years ago from Boat U.S. & it worked great for a few years on my 33 Express. I did not put many hours on it but it heated the cabin well.

The second I bought from West marine & it lasted less then 15 hours. Like others have said it would just turn off when the room was still cold. I had it a few years but with low hours so I could not return it. You think West marine would address things like this & inform the buyers that there is a problem & we are fixing it or they would pull it from the store. It is a lot of money to get a few days out of it IMO.

          Comments about Portable Cabin Heater:

Manufactured by a stnd in the industry, and low-tech, but does the job without a lot of electronics to burn out. Even on lowest (frost proof setting), it kept the cabin of a 24' pocket cruiser comfortably warm - enough to defrost windows even in an ice storm during an extended polar vortex in VA. No worries of batteries I kept on solar charge on board. No dampness. No idea of how much of my electric bill was attributed to the heater, though likely worth it.

For the amount of heat that this puts out you are better off using a light bulb for heat.
