I needed a way to on and off a Grady-White 20' Center Console while it was on our boat lift. It is perfect for that task. It is light, the bottom standoffs are the correct distance near the waterline, it is made from a sturdy plastic, and it secures itself over the side of the boat.

The standoffs were too short making the ladder useless on our boat.
I purchase a piece of 1" aluminum tubing from the hardware store and replaced the original 4 3/4 inch standoffs with 10" tubes that work perfectly on our boat.
Instructions:
Dis-aseemble the origianl standoffs, examining how they are built and function.
Drill the two holes on each end of the new tubing. I used the holes in the ladder for my guide. Use a 5/16 drill bit.
Cut each end of the tubing to your length.
Reinstall the button clips in the newly cut tubing.
Reinstall the protective end caps on the end of the new tubing that presses against the hull when in use.
Reinstall the big rubber end caps.
Push the buttons in and slide the new tubing into the brackets on the ladder, just like they were originally set.
Your all set.

Basically you are just duplicating the construction of the original standoff tubes with ones you'll cut to your own length.
It's very simple and takes less than an hour or so....and, i'm someone who has to call in help just to change the paper towel roll in the kitchen!

Comments about West Marine Portable Gunwale Mount Boarding Ladders:

I will be using this boarding ladder on my 20' model 2096 Polar Kraft aluminum Jon boat. I got West Marine's 4 step with the 7" gunwale width. WM Model #9278458 & MFG Part #85104A. I really didn't expect it to fit properly on my fishing boat. Well I was so surprised, the ladder fits perfect. Before boarding was done via my narrow cumbersome emergency ladder attached to the stern of my boat. This new portable folding boarding ladder is so much better. Now when my grandchildren come to visit everyone can board my boat with little effort. Very reasonably priced with only positive reflections.
