Comments about West Marine VHF160 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

The IPX 8 rating really grabbed me on this one, the radio lives aboard a moored sailboat. Not the smallest or lightest unit, but since I don't carry it, this wasn't a concern for me. Nice, clear audio. I haven't had it long, so I can't comment on battery life yet. This unit is replacing a ten year old Uniden unit, technology has come a long way since then! I was wary of the auto squelch, but now that I'm used to it, it works great. All in all, for my purposes, this is a great unit and the price is reasonable.

Comments about West Marine VHF160 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

I really like almost everything about this radio. However, the design of the belt clip is questionable. I understand that it is designed to be quick release but the slightest upward pressure on the radio releases the radio from the clip. When you sit down in the cockpit or, even worse, in an inflatable dinghy, it's easy for that to happen. I have almost lost the radio twice and now I have lost the belt clip. I don't see it listed as an available accessory so I may just remove the knob for it and try to find a holster instead.

Everything else about it has exceeded my expectations. Battery life seems very good so far, range and clarity are fine for a handheld. Next time, though, I would probably spend the extra $100 for GPS and DSC. When I do this will make a perfect extra unit to go out with the dinghy. Maybe I'll add a mount for it there.

Comments about West Marine VHF160 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

The last two handheld VHF I've bought were the High dollar/High Watt Icom units. This one is almost half the price, half the weight and 100% better.

Comments about West Marine VHF160 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

Really like the unit but you can not rely on the belt clip. The radio comes off the belt clip by turning the unit upside down, that's by design. It's too easy to undo the radio while moving around on the boat. How about a clip for sailors that move around a lot. Bought it, like it just don't trust it.

Comments about West Marine VHF160 Floating 6W Handheld VHF Radio:

Light weight and compact. Perfect for my fishing boat where I don't want a permanent and a fixed radio and antenna. This is my first radio experience so getting used to programming, etc. is a bit awkward for me so I can't honestly comment on ease of use yet. Seems reliable. I expect to use this for NOAA weather and emergency calls only, not for chatting. Shut up and fish.
