For us it was a good base to turn into a toy boat for the kids. We put on custom snap on seat cushions and carpeting and a Bimini top. Also added a 2 hp Yamaha 4 stroke outboard for the kids to explore the coves and get away on there own. Anyone older would want a least a 4 hp but it will weigh it down without a body upfront. And I wanted a light weight motor to put on and off at will. Electric would be better to avoid the weight distribution issue. Gave it 4 stars due to being a little flexible and not as streamlined for cutting through the water like a v hull but that would make it less stable for kids use.

I have a Mercury four hp engine I wanted to put on this tender but come to find out the transom is 2.5 inches thick and the engine mount opens up to 2.25 inches. I removed the plastic transom cover and am glad I did. The transom is two pieces of fiberglass with a piece of plywood stuck in between. It is not waterproof at all. There was a little caulking around the opening but nowhere near enough to seal it. I can imagine what the wood will look like in a few years not to mention the water in between the layers of fiberglass. I ended up using Ice and Water Shield to seal the top of the transom and made up a much thinner transom pad so the engine will fit. Other than that problem the boat seems ok for the money.

Comments about West Marine WaterTender 9.4 Rowing Dinghy:

I picked this boat up at the store in Austin Texas. They were great and very helpful. Amazingly, this fit in the bed of my Chevy pickup with the cover closed (gate down of course).
I have fit it with a set of 6.5 ft oars. It goes great with them- oarlocks already in place with plastic inserts. Just needed to buy oarlock horns, and drill the oars to fit them. It moves very well with those.
Next, I put my Minnkota 30 lb thrust motor on it with battery. Awesome. Great for fishing the inlet here. I just throw out a line, and set it on one to drag my lure slowly through the water. and when you turn that motor on 5 it seems you are flying. Uses very little battery since the boat is so light.
Lastly, I have a 5hp merc 4-stroke. I bought an extension handle for the throttle, so I can sit in the middle seat, and it planes nicely. Flat skips across the water. Very stable and quite directional. I intend to use it to teach the grandkids boating like I learned it- small motors, and oars. They'll learn a love and respect of the water as I have. Can't wait to use it for a lot more fishing. We just keep this pulled up the bank, and it shoves down the hill and pulls up quite easy. I do it all by myself each evening just using a rope on the front tie-off.
I'll buy the larger version of this when the kids get a bit bigger. Good quality boat- just like the one I had when I was a kid.

    Service and delivery comments:

It was a week late on the promised delivery- missed the truck so I lost a planned fishing weekend, but that's alright. The folks at the store were knowledgeable and very helpful. I've shopped there before, and they'll get more of my business, even though they are over an hour away. Best selection of boating goods in central Texas.

Comments about West Marine WaterTender 9.4 Rowing Dinghy:

The boat is light weight and very stable. I had debated getting an inflatable but the beach is rocky so it would need to be an RIB and they get heavy to pull up very far. Secondly I did not want to use an outboard, its a short distance I would prefer to row. The boat rows easily with one person and fine with 3 and gear. It is quite stable to stand while boarding.

Rows well for its length and shape. Also runs well with 30lb. trolling motor. Very stable. Some slapping noise going into a chop. Cartopping takes some planning but works OK on my Nissan Juke.
