Everything You Need for Your Bait Tank
If your boat has a bait tank, West Marine offers bait tank replacement parts and upgrades to keep it performing its best. Bait tank components include bait tank pumps, aerator pumps and boat livewell pumps. Aerator pumps, also known as boat livewell aerators, keep bait tank water oxygenated to keep baitfish alive. Boat livewell pumps provide a constant supply of freshwater to bait tanks. West Marine offers a large selection of bait tank accessories. Brands include Attwood, Frabill, Jabsco, Johnson, Kodiac Marine, Marine Metals, Rule Industries, Shurflo, T-H Marine and Whale Pumps.
Bait Tank Pumps FAQ
A bait tank keeps live bait healthy by providing a continuous flow of aerated water, ensuring bait remains lively and appealing to fish. Quality bait tanks reduce stress on baitfish, helping them survive longer for more effective fishing.
Choose a pump based on your tank's capacity (measured in gallons per hour, or GPH). Smaller tanks need 500-800 GPH, while larger tanks require pumps rated at 1000+ GPH for optimal water circulation and oxygenation.
Most pumps are designed for both environments, but confirm material durability for saltwater if needed, as salt can corrode standard pumps. Opt for corrosion-resistant components like bronze or stainless steel bases when using saltwater.
Livewell pumps circulate fresh water continuously, while aerator pumps add oxygen to stationary water. For boats without water access, aerator pumps are practical, whereas livewell pumps work well with external water sources.
Install the pump below water level with secure connections for optimal performance. Follow product instructions closely, ensuring watertight seals and direct, unobstructed intake lines to maintain pump efficiency.
Clean the pump after every fishing trip to remove debris and inspect it for wear. Regular maintenance helps prevent clogs, maintains proper water flow, and extends the pump’s lifespan, especially in saltwater setups.
