De-icers protect boats against ice damage.

Boats that are kept in the water during the winter can be damaged by ice. In the colder parts of the country, boats are hauled out of the water during the winter to protect from ice damage. However, many parts of the country that only have modest amounts of ice on the water can use a de-icer (aka a water circulator) to create a non-freezing area around the boat. A side benefit of de-icers is that they can help to keep boat slips free of marine growth and debris during summer months.

How do de-icers prevent ice formation?

De-icers are small electric motors with propellers attached, which are suspended in the water under or adjacent to boats. By moving slightly warmer water from underneath the boat up to the surface, ice formation can be almost completely eliminated. This also prevents ice damage to docks and pilings.

How are de-icers controlled?

Thermostats are used to turn on de-icers when the temperature drops to the point when ice might form. This saves on electricity by not having the device operating all the time.

How are de-icers installed?

De-icers can be suspended using line, with a De-Icer Horizontal Flotation kit, or attached to a dock with a De-Icer Dock Mount. The dock mount requires a length of galvanized pipe to locate the motor unit under the boat. You have to supply the 1” pipe. 12V and 120V de-icers are offered.

Sizes of De-Icers

West Marine offers four sizes of de-icers. De-icers are offered with 1/2, 3/4 or 1 hp motors. The smallest model will keep a 50’ diameter area ice-free, while the 3/4 hp model will keep a 75’ diameter area ice-free.

Brands of De-Icers Offered by West Marine

West Marine offers de-icers under the brand names Taylor Made and Kasco Marine.

Dock De-Icer FAQ

De-icers help prevent ice buildup around docks, pilings, and boats, reducing the risk of winter-related damage. By keeping water in motion, de-icers protect your dock and vessels from the pressure of expanding ice, ensuring safe and accessible waterfront areas during colder months.

A water circulator keeps water moving around the dock area, preventing ice formation by maintaining a consistent flow. This movement disrupts ice formation and prevents buildup around structures, making water circulators an effective tool for keeping docks and boats safe from ice damage.

A de-icer flotation kit helps position the de-icer at the optimal depth for effective water circulation. The flotation kit ensures that the de-icer remains at the right height in the water, maximizing its ability to prevent ice buildup and keep your dock area ice-free.

A de-icer thermostat automatically activates the de-icer when temperatures drop to a set level, helping conserve energy. By only running the de-icer when needed, thermostats reduce operating costs while ensuring that the de-icer maintains a safe, ice-free environment around the dock.

De-icer propellers are built for durability, but regular inspection is important to ensure optimal performance. Replace the propeller if you notice any signs of wear, such as cracks or bending, as a damaged propeller may reduce water circulation efficiency, compromising the de-icer's ability to prevent ice.

Yes, many de-icers are designed for use in both freshwater and saltwater environments. However, regular maintenance, such as rinsing with fresh water, is recommended for saltwater use to prevent corrosion. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure that the de-icer is suitable for the water type where it will be used.
