Guide to Selection and Use of Dock Lines
Dock lines are critical components in protecting your boat while moored. Whether you're tying up at your home slip, docking for fuel, or rafting up with other boats, choosing the right lines—and using them correctly—prevents costly damage. Dock lines absorb dynamic loads caused by wind, wakes, currents, and tides. At West Marine, we carry a wide selection of dock lines in various lengths, diameters, and materials to match every type of boat and mooring setup.
Nylon is the preferred material for most dock lines thanks to its high stretch, strength, and resistance to UV and saltwater. Three-strand nylon is the most common and budget-friendly, offering plenty of stretch and easy splicing. Double-braid lines are stronger and smoother, ideal for those seeking better handling and less tangling. Single-braid lines like Mega Braid offer maximum flexibility and are a popular choice on larger vessels where line stiffness can be a challenge.
When sizing dock lines, both length and diameter matter. Transient lines, used while docking temporarily, should be about two-thirds the boat’s length for bow and stern lines, and as long as the boat itself for spring lines. Permanent dock lines are measured and cut to fit the layout of your specific slip. As a general rule, use 1/8 inch of line diameter for every 9 feet of boat length.
To get the most life out of your dock lines, inspect them regularly for chafe or UV damage, especially at high-friction contact points. Use chafe guards, leather wraps, or hose sleeves where the lines run across cleats, chocks, or pilings. Clean lines with fresh water and mild soap and store them dry to prevent mold and mildew.
West Marine offers pre-spliced dock lines with professionally finished eye splices and whipped ends, ready to deploy. We also provide a variety of accessories including chafe protection, line holders, and instructional materials to help you tie the correct knots and secure your boat properly in any condition.
Why Nylon is the Best Choice
Nylon dock lines offer a unique blend of strength and elasticity, making them ideal for absorbing the shock of wave action and wind. Their resistance to UV rays, chemicals, and saltwater ensures longer life, even in harsh marine environments.
Choosing the Right Line Diameter
Line diameter should match the size of your boat and mooring forces. Too small, and the line may snap under stress; too large, and it becomes hard to handle and tie. West Marine provides sizing charts and recommendations to help you choose the correct diameter for safe docking.
Transient vs. Permanent Docking
Docking lines for temporary use should be more flexible and versatile, while permanent dock lines can be custom-fit to the layout of your slip. Consider investing in a full set of pre-spliced lines for both scenarios so you're always prepared.
Dock Line Construction Options
Three-strand lines are economical and stretch-friendly. Double-braid lines are stronger, sleeker, and more abrasion-resistant. Single-braid lines, used mostly on larger yachts, are supple, easy to coil, and excel in high-load applications.
Line Maintenance & Storage
To extend the life of your dock lines, rinse them with fresh water after use and inspect them for wear. Store dock lines in a dry, shaded space to prevent mold, mildew, and UV damage. Keep them loosely coiled or hung to avoid kinks and tangling.
