For this reason, West Marine’s store assortments of fishing tackle varies at the store level, in accordance with whatever type of fishing our local customers enjoy. However online, West Marine offers fishing supplies and equipment for many types of fishing, including deep-water sport fishing, inshore and river fishing, bottom and wreck fishing and flats fishing. Gear offered includes fishing rods and reels, rod and reel combos, bait tanks and pumps, fishing lures and baits, fishing rod holders, fishing terminal tackle and trolling motors—and that hardly scratches the surface! Fishing Equipment & Gear FAQ

  • Monofilament: This is the all-purpose, single-strand line that offers moderate stretch and decent strength. It’s a favorite for beginners due to its versatility and ease of use.
  • Braided Line: Made from multiple strands, braided line is stronger, thinner, and has no stretch, making it ideal for targeting larger fish. It’s great for deep-sea fishing or areas with a lot of cover.
  • Thermal Filament: This high-performance line is made by bonding small fibers together, offering a smaller diameter for better casting distance and precision. It’s perfect for finesse fishing and competitive situations.

The best fishing rod for you depends on the type of fishing you want to do. If you’re into freshwater fishing, a lighter rod with a fast action tip is great for sensitivity. For saltwater fishing or targeting larger species, go with a heavier rod with medium to slow action for more strength and durability. Don’t forget to match your rod to your reel and line for the best performance.

When selecting a trolling motor, consider your boat’s length and weight. A good rule of thumb is 2 lbs of thrust for every 100 lbs of your boat’s weight. If you’re fishing in strong currents or need more speed control, go for a higher thrust rating. Make sure your trolling motor shaft length matches your boat’s height from the mounting point to the water.

For deep-sea fishing, you’ll need heavier tackle, such as a strong conventional reel with high line capacity, braided line with a high pound test, and a solid rod that can handle the strain of large fish. Don’t forget gear like gaffs, heavy-duty nets, and electric reels for deep drops.

Always rinse your gear with fresh water after each use, especially if you’ve been fishing in saltwater. Apply anti-corrosion treatments to metal parts and keep reels lubricated. Store rods in a dry place, preferably upright or hanging, to avoid warping.

A bait tank helps keep live bait in prime condition, ensuring they remain lively and attractive to fish. They typically have a pump system that provides fresh, oxygenated water and helps remove waste, keeping bait healthier for longer.
